Dear 43 Things Users,

10 years after introducing 43 Things to the world, we have decided we have met our last goal: completing the incredible experience that has been 43 Things. Please join us in giving one last cheer to all the folks who have shared their goals with the world, as well as all the people who have worked at The Robot Co-op to build this incredible website. We won a Webby Award, published a book, and brought happiness to a lot of people.

Starting today, 43 Things users can export their goals and entries from the site. Starting August 15, we will make the site “read only”. 43 Things users will still be able to view the site and export their content, but we won’t be taking any new content from users. We hope to leave the site up for folks to see and download their content until the end of the year. Ending on New Year’s Eve takes us full circle.

It has been a long ride (one of our original goals was to "build a company that lasts at least 2 years” - we beat that one!) While we wish the site could live on, it has suffered from a number of challenges - changes in how people use the site, the advertising industry, and how search engines view the site. We wish the outcome was different – but we’ve always been realistic about when our goals are met and when they aren't.

As of today, you will be able to download your goals and entries. See more about that on the FAQ page. Thanks for 10 great years of goal-setting and achieving.

And I wrote Redstar a letter, too! 6 months ago

I sent some books to friends, including a cute book for making dorm furniture to my cute katimavik kid. I actually sat down and wrote out letters, plural, after getting addresses I needed. (It turns out 2 of them were already logged, but who knows? People move all the bloody time. :P) I made picture cards for people using pics I took in SF, and got really cute/unique cards for super cheap from our local bookstore. And I sat my ass down and wrote something thoughtful and relevant and simple on each one, and I finished, and I put them together and wrote out the addies, and they’re in my new purse to take to the postie tomorrow since I can’t find the goddamn stamps I have. (And I bought add stamps so I could add the extra postage because they just raises the rates again. So I have 22c postage and no reg stamps to add them to.)

I’m proudest of my beautiful card to my long sister-friend, a childhood relationship starting at birth. I started realizing that she doesn’t ask for help, and that terrible things have happened that she should have asked for support on, as well as the daily grind of supporting a household and taking care of a toddler and stroke victim mother. She’s always been super responsible and I think it just doesn’t occur to her to ask anyone, as well as lacking some people to ask at times. I wish she’d have asked me, though. I’m far enough away to not be involved in things if she wants impartial advice, and I’m single and have extra money and resources, not to mention ideas and contacts, if she required them. So I wrote that she had people who’d be pleased to help her, to take care of herself, and that even though her mother can’t say it right, she’s very proud of her and so am I.

13ettyI just realized...

I’m not even sure when to mark this goal as ‘complete.’ I write and send snail mail to whoever writes to me, but letter writing never seems to be a back-and-forth kind of thing anymore especially with the conveniences of technology nowadays. Maybe that’s what I had in mind when I first decided to make letter writing a goal? I don’t even remember anymore… So… I’ll just say… If I write and send a minimum of 10 letters by the end of the year, then I’ll finally mark this goal complete. :) 10 months ago
