Done, got my second passport and everything. Went to the EU as an EU citizen, returned home.
also applying for irish citizenship. my mom and i are in this together—of course, she’s doing all the work, gathering her grandmother’s certificates and whatnot. i think doing this will be something for which i will be very thankful in the end, because i don’t know anyone else who’s done something like this before.
I’m trying to apply to become a citizen of Ireland. My grandmother was born in Ireland, and thankfully she’s alive, and even more thankfully she went there recently and procured her birth certificate (the one document I thought I would have trouble with). Obtaining dual citizenship consists of collecting lots of documents, and then making copies of them, and then getting everything notarized to death. I’ve nearly got everything together and should be sending it off soon.
One tip for parents who are considering doing this for their children: do it before they are 18. The fees are less expensive for chilidren than for adults (for Irish citizenship, anyway).
