There’s nothing like fresh fish cooked over a campfire… For beginners and those that don’t have a boat, try a trout hatchery, many states have them. Odds of catching fish are usually greatly increased over “in the wild” fishing as the streams are stocked weekly or even daily. Trout also happen to be one of the easiest fish to clean, no scales and you can even cook them with the skin/head/tail on without effecting taste much. Just clean them by cutting from anus to gills, grab the gills and pull (knock them out first with a swift blow to the head with the knife handle or hammer.) Rinse briefly with clean water and scrub whatever blood/etc remains, if any. Remove the head/tail/skin if you prefer (I usually only remove the head) and place them in tin foil. Lightly perforate the inside of the trout cavity with a fork, put 1/4 stick of butter in the cavity with salt/pepper/herbs to taste. Wrap up the foil and add another foil layer, throw it in cool/medium campfire coals for 15 minutes. DELICIOUS!!! Recommended sides include salad, cornbread, fresh cooked veggies,”home fries” or any potato dish, eggs, rice.

    Mackerel Fishcakes 19 months ago

I caught and ate my own fish back in my teens. I went pier fishing with a friend during the mackerel season. I caught three on the same line. They weren’t very big and I took them home and prepared them. My mother made them into fishcakes. They were so fresh and tasty that I’ve never had mackerel like that since.

We caught fresh fish to cook for dinner on a week long paddling trip. There’s nothing better than fresh catfish off a troutline!

at least once, 3 years ago

I love catching and eating the fish, but my husband forced me to learn how to gut and clean it and even though for me it was yucky, it’s still worth it to learn- Teach a man to fish and he will never go hungry right? only if he knows how to gut and clean the thing..

Catching, gutting, cleaning fish... 3 years ago

It’s really quite easy – the hardest part is catching the fish! The best place to clean them is right there at the body of water where you caught them – you’ll need plenty of water for rinsing. It’s been a while since I’ve done this, but I can give you a basic overview. First you scale the fish with a tool called a scaler, or a knife if you don’t have a scaler. Just run the scaler or knife against the scales the “wrong way” and they’ll usually come right off. Sometimes you need to use a little elbow grease. Then you take a sharp, small knife and make a cut on the fish’s underside from the gills to the anus. Make another cut across its underside from gill to gill. Reach in and grab the gills, then yank back, all in one smooth motion, towards the anus. All of the fish’s innards should come out. At this point you may cut off the fish’s head and tail if you desire. Now all that’s left to do is wrap it up in some tin foil, cook it in the coals of a campfire, and enjoy your fresh-caught fish!

If you catch it.... 3 years ago

Well You know what they say … if you catch it, you have to eat it!!! You also have to gut it, and clean it too !!! Fair enough, it’s worth the trouble to eat fresh fish plucked right from the water’s, doesnt get any better than that really. And there is something calming about being out on the water with your line over the side of the boat , and the waves gently hypnotizing you,.... should try and get out more often than I do, miss it…

Let me tell you about Joe.... 3 years ago

Joe is a little clumsy. The one bite we got the whole entire fishing trip was on my line- the “snag” turned out to be a 16 inch speckled trout. Beautiful. I reeled it in in awe and told Joe to get the net. How this thing escaped through the net is beyond me, but seeing my baby go right before my eyes hurt like a knife in my heart.
    Another day, another trip!
