I WILL do this some day. 22 months ago

And, sadly, it will have to be sooner than later because we humans are destroying their habitat so quickly, they’ll all be gone before we know it.

But, I’m taking it off my list because I need to hone in on a few other priorities for the time being.

Trust me. I care about these fuzzy redheads and I will continue to support charities – like OFI (Orangutan Foundation International) – which fight on behalf of these gentle giants.

B’bye, goal!

If you took every orangutan in the world 2 years ago

they wouldn’t even fill the seats of a large football arena. This is what Birute Galdikas told me and it made me really sad. Orangutans are amongst our closest relatives and very few people are willing to put even $10 to saving these glorious creatures. sigh

the orang utans are so truly intelligent, I have only seen them in zoos but when they look at you the understand so much more (even than some people I know). to visit them in their own environment would be unreal

Oranagutans in Borneo 2 years ago

Borneo is the best country in the WORLD!! but the Oranagutan sanctuary is nice but not great. As these animals are very shy you can not get very close to them, they may as well go past you on a convayor belt! But saying that I have visted Borneo twice and each time go to see the sanctuary, the lectures are very interesting and seeing the baby orangutans more than make up for the touristyness of the place.

Long-term goal 2 years ago

This is absolutely something I’d like to do during my lifetime, preferably in the next decade. In fact, I’d probably have to do this during the next decade, since Orangs will probably have completely disappeared from the wild during the next few years.

But, I’m moving this to the bottom of my goals list since there’s no way this can happen in 2007. And that’s okay. I have lots of short-term goals, and this is one of my longer-term goals.

why? 2 years ago

Because I’ve always had a “thing” for primates. Because I might have to see them soon or not at all; they’re dying out at an alarming rate. Because I am a huge fan of Birute Galdikas, the Canadian woman who is the world expert on orangutans and is doing everything in her power to stop them from becoming extinct. Because they’re closely related to us, and since I don’t much like my family, I might chose apes as my family instead.

I visited the Sepilok sanctuary in Sabah a few years ago. And it was well worth it! An amazing experience. It’s humbling and painful to see how close to us these animals are – and yet they’re in danger… Get the money together somehow and get over there!

sad to think.. 3 years ago

it’s disgusting to think that these cousins of ours are in danger! ..sepilok was a great place to visit and all money goes to helping out the orphaned orangutans.. i used so much film!

Big Orange Monkeys 3 years ago

Ok, I know they are actually primates. I visited an Orangutan sanctuary in Malaysian Borneo. Seeing an orangutan in a zoo is nothing. You have to see them free, in the jungle, living their life without a cage to truly appreciate just how majestic these creatures are. They are so at home in the jungle in a way that we busy little humans could never be. Just save up the money and go.
