make a sock monkey

I was just lent a (very old ‘Waltons Celestial’) sewing machine by my grandma today. I haven’t touched a sewing machine since year 9 textiles so here’s hoping I don’t demolish a perfectly good pair of socks in the name of monkey love.

I really want to make one before I leave so my boyfriend has something to cuddle while I’m away. Hmmms, it’d be pushing it but I’m sure I could manage it if I popped away to the local shops and picked up some socks. I’m sure he’d appreciate the gesture.

I know where I can buy the socks but still haven’t been bothered to google the instructions or actually buy the socks even though I was there just yesterday. I’m lazy, Pooh! I still want to make one or two or three. Perhaps a lot and put them in a barrel at least before I find them some loving homes.

If only I had looked at instructions last night I could have bought socks today and started!!!! cries I walked past the sock stall and everything. It was a moment worthy of a public utterance (a word?) of “NOOOOOEEEESSS!!!” – lol next time. Promise.

I think I would really like to make one for my boyfriend’s birthday even though he doesn’t sleep with stuffed animals I think he’d appreciate it. I might make him a small one so he can cuddle it when he misses me. :)

I ordered my socks and materials… got email that they are backordered though, grrrr… I couldnt find the necessary socks in the store so now I must wait.. (im)patiently…..

i’ve never had a sock monkey gasp seeing the movie Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium really made me want one. i’ll have to look up how to make them on google i think and see if can. i think i might make one for my boyfriend to cuddle while i’m not there and maybe several for friends whose birthdays are very close. i wonder how a batch of mini sock monkeys would go? they look sooooo cute!

I had one of these decades ago. I think it was made for me. It was not special then, but was done very well. Back then the ladies my Mom hung out with made all kinds of things. My Mom and those ladies are all gone now too. I will be retired soon, and I too used to make a lot of things. This might be a fast simple project to make, and while doing it remember the good times of that past. I had forgotten about the Sock Monkey until I saw it on someones 43Thing. This is just one of those Happy little things. I could use a new friend, and also make one for someone else to make a memory.

yup, he still does not have a name tho. i’ll let the offspring handle that.

making the monkey was not too hard. if you have a sewing machine it is WAY easier. the harest parts are turning all the pieces and then hand sewing everything together. i am not a great hand sewer. but here he is in all his glory. good luck to the rest of you!

I have cut, sewn, turned and stuffed my monkey. Now it is time to give him (or her) a face, and thus a personality. When its done I’ll post a photo.
