These are areas of learning that at least for me, I always hoped I wouldn’t have to use.

I started my training in first aid several years ago, through a program at my local fire department. I then joined CERT which later morphed into a function under the Citizen Corps through FEMA.

Later, I took my First Responder training through the Department of Transportation. This was an interesting course where I not only learned first aid but other neat stuff like vehicular extraction – my team got to saw the roof off a Buick Regal with just hand tools! I also learned how to operate equipment to allow me to deliver oxygen, insert an airway, and use an AED (automatic electronic defibrillator) to restart someone’s heart. The purpose was for the First Responders to be able to serve the fire department as a backup in case of a widespread catastrophe. We could either accompany the firefighters to the scene or stay behind in the firehouses and run operations from there.

Sometimes, it can actually be more exciting to stay behind at the firehouse, because you never know who is going to roll up to the doors on foot, by bicycle or other means.

I used to be pretty involved with the fire department, but then the hurricanes happened and I had to take care of things at home and not outside in the community as much. Now that I am living somewhere new, I’ve put off re-establishing my community connections – maybe for too long.

This topic has inspired me. I just went online to look and see if there is a local CERT coordinator in my area, and lo and behold, there is! I’ve just sent her an email.

    fingers crossed

Why think about doing this... 23 months ago

when you could be doing it! This is so worthwhile to know, and even if you never use it, it’s a confidence booster just knowing that you could save someone’s life in an emergency.

I did this for my job. 2 years ago

Every year I take Heart Saver + and First Aid /w CPR. It is very worth doing and doesn’t take long! I took small power session classes take at a local daycare after hours taught by nurses and EMTs. We watched a video, practiced techniques, then took a test. Now I am certified for First Aid and CPR.
I needed this skill for my job.

It’s something that I believe everybody should know. In the event that something horrible happens knowing this might help me save a life.
