be truly open minded

I’m finding it difficult to actually come up with an entry for this. I think I already am open minded. ... I’ll tell you what; we’ll change the title to “Remain Open Minded”.

Rest assured, there is an entry to be had out of this! 17 months ago

Just not tonight.

I think we all have our limitations, but I’d like to think that I am as open-minded as is reasonably, humanly possible. For instance, it’s not very likely that anyone could ever convince me to convert to being ultra-conservative politically because there are too many beliefs and practices currently associated with that status (blurring the separation of church and state, trying to take away reproductive rights, general stance against gay rights, etc) with which I disagree. I don’t generally seek out the company or opinions of people who hold these beliefs, however, if I met someone that seemed interesting and this sort of discussion came up, I would certainly hear out his/her reasoning. Depending on my hypothetical person’s logic, I might or might not choose to engage in [hopefully healthy] debate about the topics. In any case, I would do my best to listen with an open mind because I do believe that everyone is entitled to their beliefs (as long as they do not force them upon others), but I am also freely admitting here that there are certain beliefs from which I know that I cannot be swayed – therein lies the limitation to being truly open-minded, I think.

I do have a laissez-faire attitude about life and I am a great listener. One of my biggest dreams/goals is to travel the world and if I were independently wealthy, I’d be a professional student, so I’d say for myself, all signs point to open-minded :-D

There’s nothing to fight or push back against. You can be, do, or have anything you desire, and everyone else can be, do, or have what they desire. I’ll focus on what I like, you focus on what you like, and we’ll all live happily ever after.

I like to think I am pretty open minded when it comes to most things, although I do realise if I feel strongly about something then I will find it very difficult to see anyone elses point of view.

I think it is very important in life to be as open minded as you possible can. Try to see all opinions and views.

last night i was at a friend’s party. this particular friend seems to be almost perpetually ill with a host of colds and flus…this makes little sense as the boy is pretty active and happy for the most part. i told him i wanted a day with him to try to do an energy reading to see if we could find out where the imbalances were.

one of the partygoers overheard me saying this and very loudly asked me,

“Oh NO! you’re not into THAT kind of stuff are you???”

i answered “almost completely and totally immersed in it.”

she rolled her eyes and started to decry all of the inherent flaws and fallacies of any mode of thinking that couldn’t be proven in a scientific environment. i told her she was free to think however she wanted…honestly, maybe she’ll prove to be right in the end.

she then asked “what do you DO?”

i said “i do astro charts, tarot and i read…vibes.” vibes is the best word i have for whatever it is that i do read.

“okay, read me. do it. right now, let’s go,” she said, rather drunk. i told her a) i dont’ want to do something under pressure and b) i was drunk…my readings get a little out of control sometimes when i’m drunk.

i tried to humor her by an attempted reading of her chart…however, her chart was almost impossible to read in a drunk setting where i felt every moment was a moment she expected me to fuck up and prove her point

honestly, she seemed so convinced of her opinion that i think if had made the chips sing and dance she would have denied it as some kind of cheap parlor trick.

but the two of us ended up getting along swimmingly…her opinions were more than valid, and it is true that a great deal of new agey, spiritual hype is overblown in certain areas, and the world is full of frauds and cheats.

how do you explain to someone that trying to force magic is like trying to eat shards of glass willingly…

while i see her perspective, i do want to ask her at some point who and what she loves….and then i’m going to ask her to prove it to me, scientifically…that should be a fun debate

reality tunnel 4 years ago

i think one of the most important books i’ve ever written is Prometheus Rising by Robert Anton Wilson, in which the author details how our conception of reality is based solely on just a few factors, and how those factors differ for just about everyone. he calls our personal perception of reality, a reality tunnel…it is a tunnel because it is very difficult to see past your own biases, your own presuppositions…the world becomes a lot more fasicnating, and people’s faults a lot more forgiveable when we can see past our own reality tunnels. to be truly open minded is one of the greatest challenges we face as a species
