How I did it: I started a group on Shelfari to discuss books written by Kentucky and Appalachian writers. I searched the "people" section to find Kentuckians initially and then invited them to join my group. I also looked through my online friends with books they've read that written by Kentucky and Appalachian authors and invitied them to join the group as well. I made the group a public group so that members of the community searching for groups to join could find my group. I've invited authors to discuss their books via our message board with the members of my group as well. Now I have three other members that are co-administrators and help me. I am thinking about putting the group on yahoo as well so that I can "grow" the membership.
Lessons & tips: Keep at it. There will be times that the posts are slow but there will also be times that people will be chatting non-stop. Don't get discouraged.
Resources: Belonging to other online groups and kind of modeling what I liked and avoiding what I didn't like were the best help. I also asked the members what they'd like the group to discuss and what they'd like to read.

Membership is up considerably since my last posting here. There are over 20 members. I have promoted two members as co-administrators with me. They are great. We have great participation on the discussion boards. I hope to get the group reading a book together this fall. I am also thinking about posting this group on yahoo groups to increase our membership. Haven’t decided yet.

I started this group online at shelfari.com. I am the administrator. The purpose of the group is to read and discuss writers from this area as well as writings about this area. So far I have 3 members besides myself!
