And then there was four ... Edit. Edit. EDIT!
It’s raining pretty heavily today, I can hear it through the ceiling of the warehouse I work in. It made me wish that I had the bookstore up and running already, so that on rainy days I could just wake up, mosey up to the store, flip the sign, brew a pot of coffee, and sit down in a comfy chair next to the window reading a good, old, heavy book. Thats the kind of life I want…
:)

I decided that I’m going to start this online to test the water so to speak. I’ve signed up with a couple of popular book buying sites, and I’m forking over a little cash out of pocket too. I’ve got a banking account set up specifically for this little venture, and I’m going to see if i can make it grow at all, and how much time I have to put into it. So far though this is a Lot of fun. It’s a blast scouting around for good books, and there have already been a couple a good ones I got really cheap, that I ought to be able to get a prett penny for. But I figure if I can start doing this part time and earn half of my current income, then I will take the plunge and try to open my own store. It seems like it’ll be a lot of effort, but not so much work, and I like that idea. I think this is going to prove to be a really good idea :)

Okay, so I bumped this one up to the top of the list because I really want to look into how feasible it would be to do this. I mean, I’ve found a couple of good retail locations that I could rent for 500 / month, and then it looks like I could build up a library pretty quickly for about another 500 / a month, so maybe I’ll take 6 months or so and do nthing but buy books, and then once I have enough books just close my eyes, take a breath, and jump off the ledge. If you think about it, whats th worst that can happen?? Right? Ok, so it’s settled. I’m doing it.

just occured to me that this is something I want to do, but it really is something I think I would absolutely love. I could spend all day reading or talking literature, have book singings, organize Read to the Sick days, I mean, there is nothing about this that I don’t like. I make pretty good money, and I have most of the week off of work, so I might even be able to afford to rent a store front and have time to run it. When I have to work here at the shop I could have the ex run the store, because she has always said that would be her dream job, and this is a job she would be able to do (she’s been off work for some time due to medical reasons). Man, I really should think about doing this. I mean, the only thing I don’t have is enough (don’t get me wrong, I have lots and lots, but I don’t think I have quite enough for an entire store). Maybe I’ll start setting 100 aside each week to buy books with, and then just do it. I mean, if I own it then I’d have to imagine I could make roughly the same amount I that I make here, only I would be doing something that I love to do. How cool would that be??

he highlighted the many independent booksellers in town that had not been able to maintain business, and how sad it is to see them go. He said something about the cover of the most recent New Yorker… and i smiled internally, that he was a subscriber (I used to).
I’ve always thought of this as a passion, not as a money maker, so it is something to do with age and in retirement. It is becoming clearer that the type of security I want in this phase of my life, is not something I will acquire as a n independent business owner. I need a source for stable income and reliable benefits, so I can start stashing cash for my later years.
and then, I will be able to build my brick and mortar…
After some internet based research and some serious soul searching about what it is exactly i want to do with myself, i think i may have hit a jackpot. A bookstore?! it sounds so simple. be my own boss, run my own hours, and best of all, be surrounded in nothing but my life long true love – books! there has GOT to be more people out there as obsessed with a classic boy meets girl tale, nail biting mystery, tear jerking romance, and just-cant-put-this-thing-down-for-the-life-of-me read as i am! only problem is, will people actually wanna come to MY store. in this steadily growing, once sleepy town i’m living in, with only one bookstore that has all of 3 employees, can i really hack it?

It definately is not as pressing as owning a house. After I buy a house… if I am in the kind of financial situation to make that happen, I might have more possibilities when it comes to opening a business. I would want to have significant savings, and consider it my 2nd income. Or maybe do it when I’m retired. I don’t think I would want to work in someone else’s bookstore. I like managing myself.
SpammySammy promised someone a cheer but can't find them! D=
I finally realize this is what I eventually want to do with my life.
This feels great. =)

My mother told me of a store called Mythras that she remembered as a child living in southern california… I think it was in La Jolla, and I’ve always wanted to recreate the image it left me with. I thought I’d pegged it when I worked in a little women’s boutique in upstate new york… but clothing is peculiar and I’d love a broader audience. next door was a used bookstore, that sold the neatest things… and had a free box outside. I’d love to spend my days cataloguing new finds and introducing strangers to magical wonders. I don’t want to limit it to books, but perhaps have a consignment component for young and developing artists.
I don’t want to do food service but there would be unlimited hotwater, and a wide variety of teas available for a minimal contribution. If I got super motivated, I would partner up with an herbalist, and have a little white and glass apothecary where people could purchase herbs and spices, and mix their own creams, fragranced things, and poultices.
