Fifty Words from Colleen C_C 6 months ago

Fifty Words, a veritable smorgasbord for Rat. Some words trigger more of a synaesthetic response than others, but I’ll go with my first reactions. Ready, Rat? Ready!

abandon = a milk chocolate-covered wafer biscuit, like a Bandit
accepted = wilted lettuce in a Miracle Whip dressing, with an undertone of mint
allowed = nothing… it’s shaped like a megaphone though
banter = a cross between a bo-bo ball and baked beans and a chocolate wafer and an elastic
brilliant = concentrated citrus, sweet and tangy
costly = soggy raisin bran and a little custard
critical = Alpha-Bits, no milk (one of the words I chose for a synaesthetic self portrait)
deigned = a cake donut rolled in cinnamon sugar
denied = reheated broken-up elbow macaroni in tomato sauce
encore = a cross between a carrot and an apple and some weak caramel sauce
explicit = nothing
failure = a grey raw or live grey fish, with fins
faultline = fault: a saltine, and line = a yellowish sweetish lemon paste
favorite = hot maple syrup on a crispy waffle
forbidden = melting supermarket butterscotch ice-cream mixed with bbq potato chips
free = soft or stirred-up pure white vanilla ice cream
frustrate = piece of built-up ice from a freezer,the kind you defrost, with some weak orange and raspberry flavour
glee = a soft roll with a lot of butter and some maple syrup on top
hands = skin and lotion (scent, not taste)
head = eggnog and apple
heart = heart, like a chicken heart, maybe a little cinnamon heart also – this one’s literal
hiatus = nothing much… a weak mixture of pineapple and salad flavours
impeachment = peach and Wrigley’s gum
impediment = nothing
implied = tinned pears
implicit = nothing
inflamed = nothing much, hard to describe, smell of a match but a viscous texture
inquired = a beigeish-grey chewy thing, hard to describe
inspired – something greenish and hairy, like a moustache
joy = sweet, pink, texture of soap and ice-cream cone, but chewier… like the inside of a kit-kat,no chocolate
marginal = sweet butter curls
mastery = instant mashed potatoes
mention = something savoury and reddish, hard to describe
merciless = part tinned apricot, part ear, part raisin in a raisin cookie
obliterate = nothing much,maybe a little olive mixed with mushroom
obstacle = an orange popsicle mixed with a potato
permitted = a hermit cookie
principal = threads of the core of a carrot with a yellow sweet hard barley sugar candy
principle = orang-y threads of the core of a carrot, no candy
quotidian = greyish-beige papery thing, no real flavour
rained = rain, maybe a little bit of wet candy cane, but not much
random = wafer with apple pie filling
recompense = nothing really
regret = the filling from a Fig Newton, the taste includes biting down on those tiny seeds
replied = tinned pears
required = hmmmm, something wet, greyish-beige
success = celery, sliced up, but stringy
symbol = nothing much

Thank you, Colleen! Smile!

Synaesthetic Portraiture grades three and four 8 months ago

I could do little else but jump in with them. It was the only way to coax out their own exuberance and confidence to experiment.
Their warm-up drawings were tight likenesses (the boys favoured alien antennae – I am out of the loop here) but when the music was played, they moved and danced as they drew. Their portraits changed into lively characters. They explored with texture and shape. I’ll describe the process…

Something a little different 8 months ago

I am teaching an elementary school art class this afternoon based on explorations in synaesthesia. (I have done this before, but this is the first time it’s actually being called teaching, which makes my transparent rat ears feel kind of funny and burning with the poseur aspect of it for I do not teach; I am leading out what is already there. And exploration does not seem like teaching to me.)
Nevertheless, I am excited to delve into it. I have music to bring in; the class will draw preliminary linear self-portraits which will be treated experimentally with colour and design as each piece of music is played. I will lead the students only by the most rudimentary of example so they may feel they understand their assignment but feel open enough to explore and experiment without modelling after my own example. I hope to create a portrait along with them in real time. I have no clue what the results will be like. That’s the part I’m most looking forward to.
