I Can See My Bedroom Floor! 3 weeks ago

Things I accomplished today:
Straightened up common areas
Did dishes
Cleaned stove top
Swept/Vacuumed floors
Dusted
Cleaned bathroom
Picked up all the junk in my room
Organized storage closet
Took out trash & recycling
Took laundry to laundromat

That’s a pretty good amount of stuff to get done in a day, I’d say.

These are the things I still need to do:
Re-clean the stove top because my soup boiled over
Make another trip to the laundromat (so! much! laundry!)
Put away a few boxes of random crap
Sell two bags of clothes, box of books, TV
Dust and sweep my room

In the last two years I have lived in three apartments, plus two semi-long periods of crashing at other peoples’ houses. All that moving has really forced me to keep reducing the amount of stuff I hang onto (that and being broke). I have found that getting rid of my extra junk and getting down to just the essentials and the things I really love has been really wonderful and freeing. I used to feel trapped and now I don’t. When I go through these last few boxes of random stuff, that will be the end of it! I am so excited. Then everything will be so nice and clean and uncluttered. After that it’s all just upkeep. Much easier.

PS: My roommate gave me a big smile while I was vacuuming and she was heading to work. Later she commented on how much better my room looked, so I think this is making me a better roommate like I hoped.

Yuck 3 weeks ago

My old roommate was really, really messy, and so any of my half-assed efforts to keep things neat seemed incredible by comparison. But my new roommate is very neat and clean, and I want to be a good roommate to her. Plus, my room is getting to be a complete disaster pit and I hate going in there. I did a whole huge scrub down of my apartment about six weeks ago, when my old roommate moved out, but I haven’t been very good at keeping things nice and clean since then. I am so sick of this mess!

Just finished straightening up the common areas and doing the dishes in the sink.

Still left to do:
Clean stove top
Sweep/Vacuum floors
Dust
Clean bathroom
Pick up all the junk in my room
Dust/sweep my room
Organize storage closet
Take out trash & recycling
Take laundry to laundromat

I feel like shit today (sick and stressed out), but I hope that getting my apartment completely clean will make everything seem fresh and good.

Refinancing This Time 1 month ago

A couple weeks ago, my landlady contacted me because there was a leak in the downstairs apartment and she was going to have someone access the roof through my apartment. So I picked up the kitchen, dining room, bathroom and hallway which would all be visible on their journey into my attic to go out onto the roof. Turns out the repairs they’d done to my porch a few years ago didn’t last and the water is pooling on my porch and then leaking into the downstairs apartment. She was supposed to repair it last weekend, but called me on Thursday to say that she hadn’t been able to get anyone to come until today. When I left before noon they still weren’t here, but when I came home tonight my porch was completely torn apart. I’m glad they felt that it was okay for them to use my snow shovel and broom which I’d had to take off my porch to use to get the stuff off the porch. I wonder how long until they get the new “rubber” roof on. I’ve been told that I can’t put anything on my porch once they do the rubber roof because it could puncture it. What the hell?! I mean why have a porch if you can’t use it?

Anyway, so my landlady tells me she’s refinancing the building and will need to show my apartment this coming Thursday, though she’s thinking she’s going to move it up to Wednesday. So I’ve got to pick up my whole apartment instead of just the parts that I’d already tackled. So here’s my task list between now and Wednesday morning:

* Kitchen dishes and stovetop 9/20
* Dining Room declutter 9/21
* Hallway remaining boxes 9/23
* Full Bathroom declutter 9/21
* Living Room Videotapes 9/22
* Living Room declutter 9/23
* Bedroom Videotapes 9/21, 9/23
* Bedroom Floor 9/21
* Dressing Room Floor 9/19
* Half Bath Floor 9/20
* Half Bath Sink 9/20
* All rooms empty trashes 9/20, 9/24
* Put Away Laundry 9/19

The junk room is still a lost cause. Working two full-time jobs means I’m rarely here. My intention was to start working on organizing my stuff once my day job was gone prior to my move, but since I’m still working eight months later, it just hasn’t happened. I’m working a 24hr shift tomorrow as a Medic, so basically I’ll have a few hours Monday and a few hours Tuesday nights. I’ll get done what I can, but I know I’ll be moving out of here sometime in the next six months so I’m not really going to invest the time it needs to do a thorough job.

Update: Just got a call that the walk through will be Thursday 9/24 at 8:30am which gives me an extra day to work on this.

I kind of cleaned last week, but now it looks ever worse… o.o I guess I need to get rid of things.

cleaned kitchen last week 1 month ago

Last weekend I cleaned out my cupboards and re-arranged counters. I enjoyed the feeling of unaccustomed orderliness for a few days, before the dirty dishes started to accumulate. The sink is clean again, at the moment. I still need to get rid of my extra pots and pans, as the kitchen is very small and clutter makes it hard to keep clean.

I moved! 1 month ago

So, i just moved about 2 weeks ago, and the apartment cleaning thing happened before I left. It is ridiculous how many things one person can accumulate in three years time, and how much cleaning needed to be done before my move-out inspection. It was altogether frustrating, but I’m glad that I have good friends and family who were a huge help to me during this process.

That said, I’m already half-tempted to slack off on unpacking, so I have to curb that impulse before it becomes too much to handle, again. I’m going to end this goal, and work on new ones. Thanks!

Why is this so hard? 2 months ago

I have cleaned my apartment before, only to have it revert to a mess the next day. I think the problem is how I organize things (or, not) and my lack of good, automatic habits. (I am very unobservant!)

I will take this weekend to get it together.

I’m almost there. I’ve done some major cleaning to my apartment. I haven’t checked this off my list yet, because I still swift things from room to room. I need to find a place for it or get rid of it.

The kitchen is the last room that needs to be overhauled. The challenge then will be KEEPING my apartment clean.
