My Ladies English Class in Nepal~ 5 months ago

I meet with a group of ladies each day from 2:00-3:30 and I teach them English, while they teach me Nepali and what life is really like for women in Nepal!!!! WOW!!!! We have great fun! One day I was trying to explain the word “necklace” to them and how “necklace is neck + lace” and what the word “lace” was… I could not find any lace in the room, but had a small bit on my bra…sooooo in the name of education I showed them the lace on my bra!!!! (LOL) They thought I had a pretty bra and we had a full on discussion about bras and panties…

We decided to start a new NGO “Bras for Nepal” ~
I will be working on this project upon my return to the states…. Every woman should have pretty underwear…don’t you think so?????

    Cheers! I miss you all!

Teaching English In Nepal! 5 months ago

I have been teaching now for about two weeks…
    it’s been fantastic and challenging…
what I have found is that, as good teachers do,
I must meet my students where they are and I must also
consider the cultural context of my students!

    I’m having a blast…and learning Nepali as well…

    ;D
more later with pictures to follow…
    when I get to a major town…
lucky to have dial up and electricity today!!!!!

    AWESOME!

    I MISS YOU
    aLL!

    Hello Friends!

I am in Kathmandu attempting to adjust to the time difference and jet lag! I slept almost all day and all night last night…for those of you who know me…so NOT like me…
    but it felt damn good!!!!!
I will get breakfast and head out today to the teachers store to begin to gather the materials for the library and teachers trainings.

I have two blog posts ready to go..and a few pics, but alas…trouble with technology in Nepal…
I am working on getting a wireless card so I can have more independence in posting… YEAH!!!!

Things are good here…monsoon…raining more than not, but Nepal is Nepal…and the closer and closer I get to this land I become more and more at ease and happy!!! Something about it…
    :D

    More later~
    Good to see YOU all!
and thanks for the cheers and messages….

    Namaste~

    ~Good News~ 6 months ago

If my bags get too crowded I can bring extra bags with me, for a price. It is not cheap, but, cheaper than shipping items to Nepal and I will know for sure they will make it there…
    I’m excited about this!

I have already packed a complete suitcase of supplies and items but I still have much more!!!!

I feel relieved that I can bring as many bags as I need…

    Teacher's Report~ 6 months ago

I sent a questionnaire to the teachers that I will be working with in Nepal and finally, through our volunteer, received a response. I wanted to know what types of things they wanted to learn and what materials they felt they needed most. They also gave feedback on the library for the village. :)

    Briefly they want to learn:

    - They want to learn different language teaching techniques, methods, and skills.

    - Learning ways to make learning more interesting, teaching art, making learning fun, and utilizing materials in different ways, learn to use student centered activities… :)

    - Learn how to differentiate instruction, assess, motivate, and inspire them to learn.

    - Materials requested or needed include educational materials in learning language, visual aids, charts, diagrams, drawing…

    - Ideas for the library included….
Having short story books with pictures, general knowledge books, jokes, folk songs, science books, computer books and games. To have a librarian, teacher, or local interested parents or guardians look after. To have local public participation, maybe story time, chess, computers, learning materials….
    good management…..

If anyone has feedback or any favorite teaching tips for
high-school age I would appreciate it!!!!
I’m putting together the presentation for the teachers training now… I’m brining my computer and a projector and will pray for electricity throughout, but will keep hardcopy with me at all times…and candles too!!! :D
