Yannigan Giving cheers!
I consumed the following books in January:
“The Outliers” by Malcolm Gladwell: Overall I enjoyed this book. I thought it was even better than Gladwell’s other books, including The Tipping Point.
“Beyond the Secret”: Not as memorable as “The Secret”, but I did get a couple of things out of it. One of them was the notion that for everytime you hear a negative about yourself, you have to hear 17 positives to overcome it. The premise being, that a negative comment is much more powerful than a positive one. This could lead to a new goal on 43 Things to make 17 positive statements for every negative statement I make.
“17 Lies that are holding you back, and the truth that can set you free”; This book was better than I expected. From “I’m too old” to “It’s Just the Way I Am” this book went into detail about 17 “lies” that keep you from achievement, and one truth (you are powerful!) that can set you free. Overall pretty good!
“Catch Every Ball” by Johnny Bench: Growing up in Cincinnati, Ohio, I was a fan of the Reds and the Big Red Machine. I’ve had the opportunity to meet Johnny Bench, the catcher on these teams, a few times, and each time I have found him to be somewhat arrogant and self centered. I hoped his book would be more informative, but basically it was page after page of Johnny telling you why he was as good as he was at his job. (Yeah, I know, now I have to come up with 17 positive statements!). There were a few minor nuggets of wisdom, but overall the book sure didn’t exceed my expectations.
In February, the first book on the list is “Awakening the Buddha Within”. Sounds pretty good, and I’m looking forward to it.
