I’ve felt good about my progress since I’ve been back. I started the week with a month’s backlog of mail, an impending photo shoot for my team and a house that wasn’t even clean by my boyfriend’s standards… The photoshoot was a success, the cat has been to the vet, my desk is mostly cleared of piles, I went to the eye doctor and I’ve finished this long weekend by finishing my taxes. Woot! It feels good to write out a to-do list that doesn’t include as many massive errands, even if I do still need a haircut. 3 years ago

I’m debating doing the H1N1 vaccine this weekend. I’ll keep an ear out for the news reports on it. The city has had a slow response to their free vaccination clinics, so they’ve opened it up to everyone. I went once to get a free flu shot and the line was quite long. It’s waaay up near the Bronx, but I think it’d be worth it… I wish I could just go to the drugstore like I did for my normal flu shot. 3 years ago

Still thinking about my goals revamp for 2010. I’d really like to read more books in French, but I keep not doing it… This article sounds very familiar. I used to read all the time when I was a kid (we’d bring home a picnic basket of books for my sister and I), but I rarely read now, outside of crap on the internet… The vocab problem complicates it, but reading would really help me form better sentences and understand the grammar better. Any suggestions from the floor? Should I or shouldn’t I?
I do feel more confident about my grammar and vocab than I did even a month or two ago. We read an article about obesity a few weeks ago, so I told a story in class about how after my grandfather died (from a stroke while he was on the operating table having quadruple bypass surgery. I managed to get a bunch of that across too…), my whole family changed our diet radically and stopped eating like Southerners and started eating more healthily. It took me like five minutes to get everything out, but I did pretty well overall. This week I only made two mistakes on my homework, which is almost shocking compared to the acres of corrections I used to make. Reading, doing homework, watching films and talking (haltingly) in class are all working pretty well for me. There are just so many moving parts to this process. At least I’m not learning English! 3 years ago

I’ve switched from walking home to exercising at home once I get there. I don’t think I’m fully well, but I feel like I’m getting baby steps closer… When you keep moving halfway towards something you never quite get there—my recovery is starting to feel like that. I’ll get there, but it’s gonna take a while. Luckily it’s the winter and cold and dark out on my way home anyway.
I’ve been working on my dad’s scarf and a scarf for the red scarf project. The second has been going really quickly, but I’ve been telling myself to do at least a little of the first every day. My dad’s scarf is fancier than the other, but I also have until the 25th to send it off. The other needs to leave my house by the 15th. 3 years ago

I still hurt. I’ve decided that if I still hurt after I come back from France I should bite the bullet and get in some PT sessions. I feel like my pain level no longer corresponds to how much or little exercise I get. I would just go ahead and do it now, but I have a lot going on already and with the holidays, I’d just rather wait. I don’t know if my new insurance will cover it or not, but I still haven’t hit my deductible on my current insurance, so I’d essentially be paying cash on the barrelhead. My new insurance has a $100 deductible. After a year of paying out of pocket for every darn thing I am so taking advantage of it and getting things fixed up properly. 3 years ago

It’s been a busy week and a busier weekend… I’ve been trying to declutter a little and get things out of the house. I’ve also been trying to stay away from the internet, but it keeps pulling me back in. French class is going well—I finally feel like I can explain my choices in grammar class, even when I can’t explain them well. I also told a long story yesterday and made very few errors, although there were a few words I just didn’t know.
I feel like I’m really far behind in cheers, so if you’ve cheered me lately, um, sorry… I don’t mean to be a black hole, honest! 3 years ago

Keep working on my mom’s holiday gift.
Wayne prodded me, so here’s an update! Last week I made an effort to get out and do all the things I’d been meaning to do. I went to a bhangra class with my sister on Monday, went rollerskating in the middle of Brooklyn on Wednesday and took my first gymnastics class on Friday. Today? Today I hurt. While the gymnastics class was super fun and didn’t leave me as achy as I expected it to, my hips and butt hurt now. My pain meds gave me some really loopy veritgo on Saturday so I’m avoiding them for now. Resting is better anyway. Calamity seems to enjoy having me around. When I got home, she wandered over to me and then sat in my lap purring for a good long time. She rarely purrs over me when I’m awake, so this was a nice change…
I had a dream last night that I bought new rollerskates. For a few weeks I’ve been debating what goal I should accomplish or what good thing I should do for myself so I can have “real” skates, but I’m going to take that as a sign that I should hurry up and finish thinking about it already!
Thanks Wayne!3 years ago

Finish this week’s French homework.

Be active, but don’t hurt myself.
I’m still kicking myself about all the things I should have talked about at our coöp meeting. Our board president is batty and vindictive and generally not nice. She sent out a letter to everyone with a bunch of blatant misinformation and then essentially said, “that’s not what I meant. Could we move on?” at our meeting. My lawyer sister reminded me that if she shoots her mouth off, it’s an official communication and we can get sued for that sort of crap and we have to pick up her lawyer bill. See? Not happy making… Ugh.
I’m still achy from cheering on Sunday, but I bought a foam roller and aaaah! It’s heavenly. I was already trying to massage myself and stretch more, but the foam roller is really, really nice and got my knots out super fast. I’m still trying to figure out how much moving I can do without hurting myself again. I walked home the other day and then ran a bunch of errands yesterday and in combination, that was 6+ miles. Today my hips hurt in a new place and I’m worried again. I want to go roller skating, but I may just go home. Sigh. 3 years ago

I’m in a miserable mood today. The doctor easily cleared me to take gymnastics, but he cautioned me against… wait for it… walking! Apparently that pain in my hip is bursitis, I was given meds for it and I’m not supposed to walk around more than I have to for 10 days. Arg! This whole thing is not making me a happy camper. At least I went to the doctor when I was actually hurting. I’ve had the same symptoms before and just been lazy for a week or so and had them go away. This time was especially bad, but at least I know what it is now… 3 years ago

Yikes! It’s been quite the week and a half since I last checked in. I felt really swamped earlier last week, but somehow everything worked out just fine. I finally had time to myself yesterday when I got the afternoon off… I had all sorts of plans for things to do with my three hours, but I ran once last errand and then just collapsed on the couch. I did get in my strength training, but that was it. I do feel like I kept on top of things, but the lack of me time and weird sleep patterns meant I still feel kinda drained.
I did find a group of people who go roller skating together, so I will have company next time I want to go. There are also a bunch of folks from my jeerleading group who want to go do gymnastics, so now I just need to herd cats and get us all motivated. I also have a new vat of yarn to knit up, even though I gave away quite a bit of stuff. 3 years ago

What a week! I’m achy and exhausted and pretty much non-functional. I imagine that this is what a hangover feels like. Brooklyn won! Plus, our routine was really awesome. The choreography was more complicated than usual, but we did just fine. We chickened out of doing the fancy pyramid that we’d only practiced once and did a normal old thigh stand for the end, but we’re planning on learning how to do fancier things as a group.
Classes start this week at FIAF, but I have that wedding this weekend. I need to write my teacher a note. I’ve been putting that off for a full week. 3 years ago

What a busy weekend! Between the holiday and all sorts of running around, I didn’t get much time to myself. I did make a loooong list on the back of an envelope and checked off a good 2/3s of it, so I feel good about that. I also discovered that one of my grammar cahiers was actually a really good one. It progressed from easy to medium to hard very well and made a good effort to explain the things that were going on without being dumbed down. I picked it up so I could study something on the train and it turned out to be really good. I did about an hour’s worth of study on the train. 3 years ago

That’s my plan! I’ve been pretty good about actually doing the things I intend to do. The weeks that are easier are the weeks where I rely less on this site and write less here. I mean, I could tell you all about my fabulous progress on little things, but I’d rather just make progress sometimes, you know? I’ve bought a helmet and pads, but I was still nervous to get out there. I walked up to 23rd street to get my helmet fitted properly, and then I slowly, slowly skated back. It was hard! I can’t imagine doing that with cars around. I was so shaky crossing 23rd street. I spent most of the time rolling along by the planters in the middle of Park Avenue and I seriously stopped every half a block. People with dogs were outpacing me and I was just going, “You can do it. You won’t fall. The cyclists are being so nice. There’s nothing in your way. You can do it. You won’t fall.” I got home just fine. At 12th street they had an open fitness thing in front of Crunch. The street had been cleared of cars, so I skated four laps up and down the street and then gave in and took off my pads, helmet and skates. Mission accomplished.
It was so nice to skate when I was really gliding along, but it was terrifying when I wasn’t. I need to get better at this. It’s good cardio, I like it when it works, and I have a perfectly lovely pair of pink roller skates. My boyfriend has promised to go to the park with me next time and a skater friend of mine promised to teach me how to really skate once I get better at it. Baby steps… 3 years ago

I skipped my workout on Monday and made up for it last night. I’m very proud of me for that. I continue to work with my vocab lists. I even only have one hat left to wash. A pretty good week overall…
I bought pads and guards on the way home from work on Monday. I want to go out and practice roller skating so I’m less of a danger to myself and others. I went to the skate park down the street, but it was pretty crowded with skateboarders [they have a lot of cool ramps]. One guy there suggested that I try Tompkins Square Park, since they have all sorts of handball courts and things. He thought I should just find an empty one and roll around until I felt comfortable. There are also two empty-ish parks to the north of my house. I might try those too… When I walk past them today, I’ll check and see if they’re all flagstone or if they have pavement too. 3 years ago
