Go on a Road Trip without Destination 3 months ago

the idea sure does fascinates me…but i’m sure it wont materialise if plan to be gone for months together…so at best i’ll plan a bonsai version to start with for few days.

A friend from California (I’m from Illinois) are leaving early July for a road trip, the “epic” road trip to the “end”. We have no real destinations in mind except for the cities where we know people that will give us a place to stay for a day or two. Our real goal is to find a place that has abundant oppurtunities with work, (keep in mind we don’t have degree’s) living potential and hopefully somewhere that heavily supports fine arts. Both of us being artists (myself an American Academy dropout) Somehwhere new that has plenty of blue-collar work, so I can support my painting habit and work my way into gallery space. Cities that are tentative stopping points include Savannah, Tampa Bay, Providence, Toronto, Boston, and on the west coast Austin, Louisville, Santa Fe, Vancouver, Portland, and hopefully Boulder and Denver. Any one have ANY suggestions before our launch date of July 5th (leaving from Southern Illinois).

I was chatting tonight about my biggest road trip ever – it made me think – but what have I done lately? The voice in my head said ‘sweet diddly that’s what!’ And that’s just a pile of crap.

How many people did I meet who longed to go on a road trip, but felt they couldn’t – so many excuses -the time for such things was well past or they had too many responsibilities or were too old – whatever! It doesn’t have to be a month – I’ll just drive for as long as I can on a Saturday, see where that gets me and drive back on the Sunday.

Hmmm, I’ve been east, I’ve been west, there really aren’t any roads to the north – I’m feeling drawn to the south.

The closest I ever came to this was my honeymoon but we had a destination so it doesn’t really count. Although we never made it to our destination because we just started randomly going to every side of the road & out of the way art/antique/book shoppe we found in every town on the way! And we found one place we loved so much we spent the rest of our time there! :) Made for amazing memories at any rate.

Right now we are planning a road trip by Greyhound, just to see Canada more, next year. Again, it’s a planned thing…sighs One day when I am secure enough, we will jump in the car & go for it. :)

A trip up the coast 17 months ago

I love going on roadtrips, but the trip that had no destination was the best road trip of them all. There was no timeframe either. I switched off my phone. Didn’t tell anyone I was leaving Sydney. Had to get away! So did my friend. So we said that morning let’s go on roadtrip and we did. We were on uni holidays at the time so we had the freedom to disappear for 3 days.

I’d thrown a tent in the car and we ended up at a beach side park. My friend broke my air bed trying to use it as a surfboard.

Why not? It seems like Im always going somewhere specific, always having something to do. It would be amazing to just drive, go nowhere specific, and find fun and unusual things to do with my friends.

I surprised myself one day by actually listening to my own advice. Frustrated by work and family, I packed a bag, jumped in the car, and drove North. I ended up in a random little town with no veggie options (imagine!) but man, that was an awesome weekend with lots of surprises and a huge bonus: that amazing feeling of independence you get from nobody knowing where you are.

Go do it!

That was a good idea! 20 months ago

I saw someone had this as one of their goals. Not only is it expesnsive and usually a let down when you plan something, but it’s so structured. You have no idea where you’re going and all it takes is some gas and a couple of bags of chips! Good call someone!

Campaign for Community 22 months ago

We did this a year ago, some friends and myself. Over the course of 10 days, we traveled to 14 states and experienced weather from 0 degrees to 75. We called it the Campaign for Community. We would roll into town and meet people and learn about their community, and then they would tell us where to go next. Read all about it here:
