Doing it! 1 month ago

Yesterday I went to a test class, and it was fine! lots of talking, a bit of grammar. And I did pretty well! (considering I haven’t talked any French in 7 years). I actually had lots of fun. So I joined the class :-)

I’m going to get serious on this one. I don’t know yet how (courses? books? podcasts?) but it’s happening. The problem I have right now is that I get very high scores in the classification tests for the courses because I know the language well and a little intuition makes the job. But in real life I don’t remember almost anything! maybe private lessons would help in this situation…

I can only do one foreign language at a time... 9 months ago

I gave up on this months ago, but I never wrote anything about it. I want to have at least one entry for every goal I either completed or gave up on, or else what’s the point of even having it listed if I’m not going to say anything about it?

I studied French for four years and when I was younger thought that one day I would like to live in Europe or Quebec. I’m not so sure about living in either of those places now as they don’t interest me as much. At the time I adopted this goal, I thought that since I invested so much time in the language that it would be a waste not to pick it up again. Realistically, I admitted that since I’m studying Chinese now, I wouldn’t have time for this, so I gave up. I’m still proud of the fact, however, that I can watch French language movies without having to rely on the subtitles so much (although I can’t speak the language fluently)...

My mom’s a French teacher, and I knew quite a bit of French back in high school. Now I understand it and read it, but my speaking skills are very sad and I don’t think I could write a sentence on my own.

I joined the site above last night, but haven’t really had a chance to explore it yet.

I also need to look further into Mango languages – my library has a subscription to it, and it’s supposed to be pretty good.

I studied French in high school and never really thought about it after that, except for the occasional vacation in France. Now I’ve moved to Canada I’d kinda like to brush up on the language, even though I haven’t actually moved to a French-speaking area!

Even though its probably the most pretencious language i know and not as practical as it should be, its still a pleasure to keep learning it…. So enjoy it!

When I lived in Montreal, I was so shy about using French. I love speaking different languages, but the accent was a bit different than what I was accustomed to, and I was young and worried about sounding ridiculous.

When I went back last weekend, I had an amazing time… and used French all weekend without anyone having such a hard time understanding me that they switched over to English. I understood nearly everything too, without asking anyone to slow down or repeat themselves, and I was even able to joke around and flirt really comfortably. Of course I still feel more at ease in Spanish because I use it every day, but I’m not sure what I was being such a jerk to myself about, because I remember more French than I gave myself credit for. I want to keep working at this over the summer, so that if I decide to move to Montreal in the fall, I’ll have a really strong foundation for learning new words/expressions quickly.
