I completed the Divemaster course at the beginning of the year and thought getting work would be a cinch, but how i was wrong, in my home town which is really reliant on tourisim (for the sake of our local economy)and full of backpackers also boasts the highest standards in australia for people trying to break into this industry.
not only do a lot of places want a qualified instructor with a (couple of years of experience) but also a rasting of coxswain or higher, and not only that german, japanese and korean instructors always take preference, so I have found it tough to even get an interview with any companies even for hostie jobs.
but i’m not giving up on my goal of becoming an instructor, i just may have to venture elsewhere to acheive what i want, and diving is my passion in life so i will go just about anywhere to do it!
my advice to anyone who thinks its as simple as becoming an instructor, take your time with it, enjoy heaps of fun dives before you take any professional steps and try to do some specialty courses like the enriched air course, becuase if you later want to go on to become a tech diver its nessercary for you to be a certified enriched air diver with at least 20 logged EANx dives(with PADI anyway)and not only that the enriched air course gives you insight to some of the physics you learn during the Divemaster course.
good luck to all you bubble heads and may you go down in style!
I started scuba a few years ago and I love it. I want to help others learn to love it as well.
merih is working on project number 1: business cards on line ..
.. dive now, work later !
Technically I just want to be certified as a dive instructor. I don’t have a driving ambition to actually teach people. However, by being certified I improve my chances of getting work on dive boats.
In fact, if I’m dive instructor certified, there’s an excellent chance I’ll be able to go out as the videographer on some of the more expensive boats hereabouts.
I’m advanced certified now, and am booked in to do Rescue Diver next week. I’m hoping I can do the Divermaster course before Uni goes back, then get my hours up. You only need 60 dives to dive instructor, and I’m up to 46 now… Just doing rescue diver and divemaster I should have enough dives, but it never hurts to have more.
I should be able to get myself some work with divemaster certification to help earn the money I need to do instructor. And get all the gear. That stuff is so expensive!
So hopefully I’ll be able to do instructor in the break between semesters and be out on boats for some of those holidays.
