Faust is definately worth enduring. It can be trying at times – probably due to translation. It completely changed my outlook on life – you’ll ponder & re-ponder Faust’s genuine, beautiful soliloquies for days. Goethe truly is a genius – few writers could give such an honest representation of the human condition
even though I’m a native speaker of German, this one is a tuff goal. I started reading Faust a couple of days ago, at night, in bed and this didn’t seem to be the right time… I fell asleep.
I have now idea why I find it much easier to read English or French classics – German classics bore me. Sigh. I’ll give it another try anyway…
I got an electronic version and uploaded to my PDA, so it will be the next book I read. Yay! :)
I love the old Hebrew translation to the piece, as well as the German original. Great, fun, witty, multilayered. Just the kind of thing that would make a witch smile.
I have read it when I was around 15, and remember how I was stunned by the depth of this dialog between the “selfish” and the “sacrificial” within one person. Now I would like to read it again, because I believe there is more to be gained from the book at a somewhat more mature age.
How can one miss out on “Faust”? Jesus, I have no clue and I know I should read it. I’m even interested in it, a little afraid, maybe.
