Peace the world is round! 6 days ago

I have a passion for helping people. I wander in the darkness in search of lost souls. I find them and lead them back into the light. My mission is to serve the world. I am more than convinced I belong in the Peace Corps. I would even like to work for this amazing organization in the future. I am in my second year of college. I plan to major in Biology. My biggest dream is to be part of the Peace Corps. Have I mentioned my biggest desire is to be part of the Pace Corps? ; )

Madagascar, sweet Madagascar! 1 week ago

I swore in on August 22, and I have been at site for over a month now. I feel like I can officially check this off! My experience thus far has been nothing less than incredible, and it is a pity words cannot describe the awesomeness that is Madagascar. I occasionally blog at http://jessz.livejournal.com and post photos at http://picasaweb.google.com/jessicasicard. Will post more photos when I get to a city with a fast net connection. :)

Timeline - Update 2 weeks ago

My medical kit came while I was out of town. Now I’m in the process of getting little tick-marks into all of the little boxes on the Checklist. I can’t get an eye exam until the end of October. My file won’t be submitted for my invitation until the Medical Reviewer gets everything and has the time to go through it all. So this is the Big Wait time now.

Rolling along... 3 weeks ago

Just mailed my medical packet in on Saturday! I hope it all clears without any problems :)

This is something I could do after college, or in conjunction with getting a masters degree in something like environmental science or psychology.

*All volunteers serve for 27 months.
*Primarily they will put you where your skills are most needed.
*Volunteers may defer repayment on student loans under several federal programs. Volunteers with Perkins loans are eligible for a 15 percent cancellation of their outstanding balance for each year of Peace Corps service (4 years: 70% cancellation).
*The entire application process takes about 9 months. They encourage you to apply 9-12 months before you’ll be ready to serve.
*You should expect to live on your own and work independently.
