“Most of my heroes don’t appear on no stamps.”
- Public Enemy “Fight the Power”

I still think that there is lot of power to fight against and I don’t intend to stop. However, I am marking this as done because I feel that I do this on a daily basis on my own through my teaching, my writing, my research, and my willingness to speak out on things that bother me. Heck, I’ve even been escorted out of a national monument by security.

That said, I have compiled a list of five ways that I would like to continue to fight the power.

1. I woud like to appear in a subsequent edition of This Book While I think the book itself is a piece of shit and the author makes my skin crawl, I consider the collection of academics in this book to be an honor roll of sorts. If Ican be half the scholar and teacher that some of the men and women in here are, I will have far exceeded my career expectations.

2. I would like to be called out as an Enemy of America or something of that sort by This Jackass Seriously, if he’s for it, I’m probably against it. I would equally like for This Guy to put me On Notice.

3. Have a televised debate with HER and completely own her on national television. Click the link only if you really want to Scare the crap out of yourself

4. Go on Her Televsion Show and ask her politely to stop butchering my favorite classic novels and to stop pretending like she is a literature professor. She’s not.

5. Follow examples set by Him , and Her, and Him not to mention Frederick Douglass, Sojourner Truth, James Baldwin, Henry David Thoreau, Mother Teresa, Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, and even Him and Him by speaking out for, standing up for, and actively working for freedom, justice, equality, and poverty.

Lets fight the power! 2 years ago

What can I do? I wish there was an org that actually did something. Like greenpeace, but instead of screwing with whaling ships it would screw with the military industrial complex. Oh yeah, they would all get blown up.

why the hell are the police and the government throwing us in jail. it’s mostly the governments fault. think of this. the taxes are pretty high and the important things in life (surgery, medications, health equipment, health insurance, etc) are also really expansive, and gas prices are getting higher and higher with no end in sight. So we revert to stealing to save money and when the richy rich fat cats (fat cat=a rich person)or anyone catches him or her stealing, the burgler might kill that person so they’ll be no witnesses because the burgler is afraid of the police and jail. Also we might rob banks. so think about that for me. oh yeah, FIGHT THE FUCKINPOWER!!!

Brothers and Sisters wake up!

Issues 3 years ago

I forced myself to narrow down the causes I will fight for next year. I’ve winnowed the list down to four, but realistically I should probably choose which ones I would devote time to vs. donating money to.

Women’s Rights
Did you know women still make 75 cents for every dollar a man makes for the exact same job? It must be because we are so tiresome to accomodate when we pump out our welfare babies. I also feel very strongly on a woman’s right to choose, but specifically for this year I really want to focus on getting women to love themselves and demand to be treated with respect and equity. I personally struggle with this all the time; somewhere in my mid-teens my self-confidence became so brittle, and I still catch myself connecting my dress size to my worth as a human being. That is so insane!

Marriage Equality/Gay Rights
One day in the very near future, we will look at how we treated our gay brothers and sisters and will hang our heads in shame. It just makes no fucking sense to me whatsoever, and I can’t even talk about it without getting completely incensed. Living in the Bay Area, I see so many people with so much love to give denied basic human rights such as the right to marry, the right to name a same-sex partner as a beneficiary, the right to have same-sex parents listed on a birth certificate, etc. And before you start labeling these rights as “petty” or “mere details,” just remember that in all parts of this country you can still get your ass beat by holding your partner’s hand in public.

Animal Welfare
I feel a pull towards helping animals on various fronts: fighting against factory farming, helping end animal testing for non-animal products, and protecting companion animals. To help fight factory farming, I have become a pescatarian recently (vegetarian + fish/shellfish), and have stopped buying leather and wool. As for animal testing, I don’t buy products tested on animals or that contain animal products. As for protecting pets, I will become a regular contributor to my local SPCA and hopefully volunteer as well. I am also thinking about joining PETA, but I want to do some more research first.

Mental Health
I think we still live in a world where mental health is downplayed as a “soft” science, but only because the brain is still a mystery to us. We have built such a depressing, stressful, insane world for ourselves and expect everyone to adapt with no hiccups along the way. We are losing amazing people to suicide and addiction everyday—people who are creative, sensitive, and capable of contributing so much to an otherwise bland society. We need to educate the general public that mental illness is relatively common, most of it is treatable, and take away the stigma of being branded “crazy.”
