let me see, i’ve taken local trains in sydney, melbourne, new york and london. i’ve taken them more long distance in peru. I like trains, they sound cool, you can get up and walk around, they have tracks, they are better for the environment than driving.
we went across america following jack kerouac’s books as our maps. we started in lowell mass then went to nyc, chicago, denver, sf, and ended in denver.
They used to have an old line for passengers from Guadalajara to Mexico City, it was a nice train it had private rooms with their own bathrooms, and a dinning car… I feel like a grandma talking about it because they took it out. In my timech they had a train!!! Anyways, I traveled once with my grandma that was disoriented and scared, so I didn’t get enough sleep that time, and a couple of times by myself.
Then in Europe I travel in the train from Paris to Rome, and from Rome to Spain, and from there to Andorra, then back to France…snoring passenger in second class from Paris to Rome but I still loved it!!!!
more cuddling time with your loved one
good company
great scenery and great photo opportunities
saving money
All in all, I love traveling by train with Mark because he’s a cuddle bug and he easily falls asleep while I cuddle him. LOL, of course I fell asleep cuddling him on the tube of all places :-P
Taylor is trying to juggle two house payments.
Very worth it. Some of our best vacation memories are on trains.
I guess a train journey would be alright if I had gone with friends or family in a nice comfy sleeper cabin. But I’ve done the 24 hour trip between Adelaide and Sydney several times in a ‘cheap seat’ and definitely don’t think that is worth it! I’d rather fly and get to my destination faster.
I love travelling by train. It whoops the butt of airplane travel, provides excellent changes of scenery, lots of opportunities to meet people, and changes the pace of travel in general. When you travel by train, just getting to a destination is part of the fun and adventure.
All I would say is that if you are going to be on the train overnight, and can afford it, go for a sleeper car. You have your own little nook you can flee to when sociability escapes you, and, on Amtrak, the fare includes three full meals in the restaurant. Travelling coach here in the US is a total nightmare. I’ve had some horrible experiences including being stuck on a car with a broken/backed-up toilet. Hell on rails! Sleeper cars… much, much, much better.
No matter where you stay on the train, hit up the bar car. It’s where all the action is.
Pro: Relatively inexpensive compared to flying
Pro: Great way to see places you might not normally
Con: Time consuming
Con: The lounge car I sat in was full of drunks
Like any long trip, be sure to have a book or music player if you need to tune out your fellow travellers.
I’ve made a couple of train journeys and I really enjoy them. Faster than cars and buses, and more comfortable (more space, you can get up and walk about and stretch your legs), and with better scenery than planes. One of my favourite ways to travel.
