I don’t eat dairy anymore, so a lot of the gelato flavors aren’t for me any more, but the sorbeto flavors are fantastic. My favorite is Blackberry Cabernet which is a mix of blackberry and cabernet sauvignon flavors. I generally like the fruit sorbets as well with raspberry near the top.
When I used to eat dairy gelato those flavors were fantastic. I think they tend to be more intense and concentrated than normal ice cream flavors.

FlyGirl tries to remember to do things, but life keeps getting in the way.
In Roma, there was this little gelato stand across the street from the apartment and we would wander over in the evenings. To eat gelato, of course—the stand was out of the tourist district and therefore cheaper. But also to hang around on the sidewalk and listen. Men, women, whole families would show up to eat ice cream and connect with their neighbors and talk and talk in that musical Italian lilt. And stay, long after the gelato was gone, talking, orating, discussing, perpetuating the back and forth that began with the forums of ancient Rome and has continued to the present day. Gelato is so much nicer a venue for meeting and exchange than the stones of ancient Rome.

There are at least 4 gelato stands in the mall ajacent to my hotel. One is right by the exit going from the mall to back to the hotel, and so far I’ve been there twice in 2 days!
I’ve tried lemon and Dutch chocolate so far. Based on those two I suspect that the milky flavors will be my favorite over the fruit. While I have to say gelato is quite tasty, I don’t see it as much different than ice cream and now that I’ve tried the basics I think the novelty has worn off and i will be able to resist the temptation from here on out… Well, maybe. I want to try one of the more non-traditional flavors before I give up entirely. Maybe hazelnut.

Gelato is an experience like no other. You think it’s just like ice cream… yeah right! I recommend straciatella, but there’s no guarantee that your local store will have it, since it’s made in small batches from fresh ingredients… MMMM! Totally worth doing!

I don’t know if I would be able to tell the difference between gelato and good ice cream, but it was excellent. I would like to try more flavors now!
