Went to a restaurant called Misono in Kyoto which specializes in teppanyaki (in fact, they claim to have invented the technique). The meal was expensive but not outrageously so, and we had our our own chef chopping and frying the meat right at the table.
As for the beef itself, it was just as people describe: meltingly tender, almost like eating meat-flavored butter. Now I only wish I could eat it in other forms… say, shabu-shabu, or sashimi-style.
I’ll post pictures later.
Great stuff! Certainly worth it. I had it sashimi style at Dublin Teppanyaki in Taipei. It’s just totally different from normal beef. Tons of marbling, and it just melts in your mouth.
I bought tickets for Japan! Leaving mid-June. How do I figure out the best place to get Kobe beef? It doesn’t literally have to be the best place, but I don’t want to come home only to have someone tell me, “oh, that place? They’re totally inauthentic, just cater to tourists.” That would suck.
Looks like my parents are going to Tokyo this spring, and I may join them for a week. I don’t know the final details yet.
It was absolutely delicious and part of a business dinner I didn’t have to pay for. Tender, juicy, and full of flavor. By all means try it if you have the opportunity. But other than restaurants in Japan, you have to be a bit skeptical of anyplace saying they serve Kobe beef. (Just on a whim, I called Benihana here in Las Vegas to see if they served it, but they do not.) And if you happen to see it sold in a Japanese market, do NOT try to buy the meat and cook it yourself. Leave it to a chef who is familiar with the cuts, preparation and sauces.
The best ever, but not twice as good as the filet-mignon. Glad I did it (for an anniversary) but will not be getting it very often.
Had some as sashimi but it was not as good.
i have ate the steaks and burgers. mainly because i raise this type of beef. and i am looking at selling it from my farm to your plate. feel free to email me keepmeposted2k1@yahoo.com or here is my phone number if interested in some meat and i can help your needs. my name is Adam
Helps to have someone next to you order a filet mignon, so you can compare. I’d say that it’s worth eating once, but it’s not worth $100. I’d price it at $50 or $60. But still, it’s worth eating it once.
