Girl2BCorrupted resuming where i left off

im cutting my hair this month 4 months ago

and will be starting again. im not going too short, but my last relaxer left me really over processed with severely shedding ends, and scalp burns.

I think my down fall was letting a stylist @ the Dominican salon rush me out of the salon without my regular deep conditioner and thermal protection. Then going to another salon and letting a stylist with overprocessed color and hair perm my hair.

If they jack up their own hair, what are they supposed to do with ours. Sometimes one needs to follow gut instincts instead of sucumbing to niceties.

Anyways, I’ll snip and start again. No biggie. If I make sure i have no more breakage episodes like this, in 2 years or so, i should still have decent length.

still trying to decide whether or not to perm lil girls hair 5 months ago

i most likely will give her a light texturizer or gentle perm if i can find one before she starts 5th grade this September.

The popular kiddie perms that ive seen advertised seem to be little more than regular adult perms with childrens faces on the box.

If i can find someone to skillfully apply her perm so that she gets zero burns to her scalp (like I always did when i was her age when i got perms. I was told that it was supposed to burn), and that will not severely damage or thin out her hair, im going to go forward with the perm.

In the meantime she’s pony tailed and braided. i now pay extra attention to her hairline edges as they have always been thin, and i had been careless pulling on those thin edges with tight ponytails.
And im reading up on products and natural remedies that are good for natural Afro American hair health.

im also going to take her to a natural haircare specialist and get her hair evaluated-get a professional opinion.

Im not holistically tied to natural hair, but when i explained to my daughter that a perm chemically alters the hair shes had since birth, we did get a little emotional about it.. then we kinda got over it…

i just want her and her hair to be as healthy as possible, and for it to have a little versatilty

damn, got to get a cut 5 months ago

ive been getting wash and sets @ Dominican salon, which, although makes my hair look great for a couple of days, also thins out and dries my hair in the long run. my ends are splitting like crazy.

im going to look up my favorite hair cut specialist and ask him to hook @ sista up. He knows the difference between a healthy trim and a cut, and though he cut my hair years ago, i believe his cut is responsible for the length i have now. he went Hollywood and his rates are a little expensive now, but i’ll bite the bullet and give him a ring.

this goal, honestly, makes me feel a little like an airhead 6 months ago

but, im going to stick with it. Its definately a challenge, and Im down for challenges.
And if i dont like it, or I should say, if i get tired of it, I can cut it off.

The thing is, my daughter wants this too, and she kind of motivated me with this as I was looking for better ways to take care of her hair to promote growth. But I dont like her seeing me put alot of effort into this. This really is a shallow goal (Compared to others, i feel, personally), and I feel like a bubble head when she sees me researching and actually putting effort into this.

As a black woman, there are cultural concerns and stigma about hair in general, and we have to be real careful about what we teach our little girls, both consciously and unconsciously, about our hair, and about our beauty beliefs.

Shes seen my low maintenance hair, and my higher maintenance hair, my hair cut way low into a style, my hair in a nappy pony tail weave, my unpermed hair in a braided out style, and my longer permed hair in a Dominican blow out. She liked them all, (all except the style when I have my hair completely covered in a wrapped scarf-she hates that, while i prefer it). But, I hope she is getting the message of hair versatility.
And I hope she also sees this as one of mom’s projects, and not something that she should ever obsess about. Hair is just hair. You can cut it, grow it, or buy it.

We are not our hair

:D My hair is layered with the middle lengths being at my bra strap. I think for it to get waist length.. it could take another year or two.

that is a good website to look at for info.

:D good luck to everyone else who wants to grow waist-length hair! :D

while over at the Dominican salon for my wash and set 6 months ago

I saw this beautiful poster of a dominican sister (or at least, she appeared to me some brand of afro-Latin) with a gorgeous somewhat relaxed curly afro mane that hung down past her shoulders and back. Ill post a pic when I have one. She is my inspiration for this goal. I want her hair.

There are lots of good forums that offer support for this
like longhaircareforum.com as well as many blogs, and such.

Ive been experiencing some length, more than usual with not much effort other than minimal heat, and less combing and brushing (keeping hair tied up mostly), and infrequent perming. But once I had achieved some noteworthy length, I really did start to like it.

It does make me feel somewhat more feminine and sexy, especially since i wear mine curly.

My hair right now is at what I believe some refer to as about bra strap length. I’ll try this out and see how far i can go before I get tired of it. Me and my daughter will be doing this together.

Im guessing it will take about 2 years?

I have always looked at long haired women with envy and i promised myself when i turned 25 I’d never cut my hair ever again. I am about to be 22 and my hair is a little past my collar bone, I hope to have it grow to my waist(i have a LONG torso) within the next 2 years. Now for babying it the natural way.

What girl, at one point or another, hasn’t wanted to have Rapunzelesque locks? I have been dreaming of this since I was five years old, and I’m nineteen now. Now that my life is (mostly) my own, it’s time to do it!
