Thailand is a symbol of freedom to me. I like to be in a place where I am given a rose and a gun in a tray and left on me to choose my destiny. My sufferings will be my freedom and happiness, as will be my achievements or peace.

I moved to Bangkok 3 weeks ago to live and work and I’m loving it. I had the advantage of having visited here several times in the past so I sort of know my way aound the city quite well. Having a well payign job also helps.

Beaches, Pad Thai and smiling friendly people is the image that most people have of Thailand. This information is usually passed to them from friends who spent two weeks on vacation.

The reality is living in Thailand is much different than vacationing in Thailand. Finding a place to live, work, and eat, getting around the city, shopping, for all that and more there is the normal way and then there is the Thai way.

Unless you are familiar with Thai culture and customs you could find your stay here very frustrating and you’ll be wondering what the hell your friends were talking about.

However with a simple understanding of the culture, customs and the city you can have an amazing life here. I lived in Thailand for a year and I can honestly say I was never bored. If you are coming from the west you fill find an energy that you’ve never experienced before. Ever had to step aside on the sidewalk as an elephant strolls by?

If anyone wants further information on moving to Thailand feel free to contact me.

Advice - :) 23 months ago

I have just stumbled onto this site while researching living in Thailand. I have browsed through what some people have said and my thirst has just intensified.
Can anyone give me advise on how I go about moving to Thailand, working with charity and living, as we call it, ‘the simple life’?
Thanks a million and much peace and love

i want to live there, on the beach, and rock climb and study. be able to focus on what is important. explore what it means to be lonely. learn to appreciate the friends i have at home.

“We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.”

I lived in Bangkok for three years.

Absolutely loved it from start to finish. Bangkok has such energy.

Think long term! 2 years ago

I’ve been living in Thailand for over 3 years and it makes a difference to think beyond just a few months or even just a year.

Lots of things are just coming into fruition and look forward to meeting my 4 year commitment to stay put :)
