I’ve wanted to live here since visiting in 2005. I’ve got a year left in college and I want to be there in 2 years or less. I’m trying to decide right now if I want to live in the city or in another place nearby, but the Mission district is my favorite.

How I did it: I saved a reasonable amount of money, about 5k, and took off. Most of the rest I played by ear, which does make it a bit more difficult. It wasn't too difficult either way, though. Read how I did it…

How I did it: Transferring to a University in the City . I completed my two years of general education. I applied to universities within San Francisco. I was admitted to one. I looked for a place in the neighborhood near my school. I used my scholarships/grants/loans to pay for a year of my living expenses until I look for a job. Currently I am full time student volunteering for Americorps. Read how I did it…
How I did it: My girlfriend and I moved to San Francisco three days after college graduation, with no job, no friends there, and a wildly overpriced apartment (at least by Chicago standards) that we found on CL. Totally hard, but wonderfully worth it. Only took three long months to find a job, it was hard on my credit cards, but good otherwise. Read how I did it…

How I did it: My husband was offered a transfer. We accepted. They took care of most things for us (visa, removals etc), but we had a lot of packing and so on to do. Read how I did it…
How I did it: i packed up all my stuff, put them in storage, and moved in with my bf :) we stayed in his tiny room in the city for a couple of months, then finally found our new home in Oakland, by Lake Merritt. the rent is sooooo much cheaper, and the area is SUPER nice. it reminds much of san diego with the nice breezy weather and the large open space by a beautiful body of water. I am trying to move to San Francisco by the end of December 23, 2009. I have planned this since 2005 now I am ready to do it.
I’ve lived in San Francisco for close to 2 years now. It’s a beautiful city with so much cultural diversity in such a small place (7×7 miles!). If you’ve ever visited, you’ll understand why people want to move here. Even on a foggy day, it’s one of the best cities in the world.
I’ve been working in Monterey for the past two years and job is becomming increasingly boring. I’m working on my master’s in journaliam at san jose state and I just don’t see my career advancing in this area. There’s vary little work down here for journaliam and mass communications and I think it’s time I go where my best opportunity for advancement is. I also have a few friends that live and work up in the city & in Oakland, so I won’t be a complete loner.
However, I work full time in Monterey, commute twice a week at night to san jose for my two grad classes. So on top of the work restrictions, the distance, and the time I need to spend on my studies, I don’t know how it’s going to happen. But I think I can do it. I’m used to working 24/7 on different projects. I just hope it doesn’t take too long. I know it won’t be easy, but I’ve spent enough time daydreaming about this and I need to start acting now.
I got so close- I got a divorce last year, had some strong job prospects, nothing holding me back anymore and then… the house wouldn’t sell. In addition, I meet the great love of my life and now SHE has ties here. Sigh. I still know I will live in the area one day. It’s as close to heaven on Earth as I’ll ever come so even if I have to trade down my house size, reduce some expenditures, etc, it will be worth it.
Wish me luck!

It’s nearly crunch time! I expect the passport and visa back today and my new giant suitcase to be delivered tomorrow. The company will book me a ticket as soon as I have the visa.
Meanwhile, my hubby is already stateside and he has found somewhere for us to live.
As of this moment, I’ve lived in California for exactly ten years. If I haven’t moved to San Francisco before now, I’m never going to. Every time I contemplate the idea, I think of one reason I’d want to and 20 reasons I wouldn’t. Obviously, I don’t belong in the city. And I’m now sort of done apologizing for that fact.
Somebody’s got to be the disco freak of the Valley anyway, right?
