I was in Surfer’s Paradise, after spending a week diving the Great Barrier Reef in Cairns, and I wanted to remember this amazing trip – this first visit ever out of NZ, this first time scuba diving (it is like visiting another planet, truly breathtaking. I had visited every tattoo store between Cairns and Surfer’s Paradise, trying to find someone who could tatt my arm in a blue starfish, as a memento.
In Surfer’s, I found a guy – multi-award winning tattartist, been doing it for 25yrs, and he agreed to do my tatt right then and there. He had never done a blue starfish before, and only one other starfish at all. He did a beautiful (excruciating) job of my new baby, in at least 5 different shades of blue. It is so bright and beautiful that people don’t think its real :) I’ll upload a pic when I can, but he did me proud. It’s exactly what I wanted. :)

Well, here she is :)
Forgive me for waiting to post—she’s nearly 4 weeks old—but i wanted to get thru the flaky, peel-ly part before i tried to photograph.
Oh, words of wisdom: if you ever get any ink around your ankle, don’t even wait for trouble, elevate your foot from the start and keep it elevated for several days. I didn’t for the first 2 days and my ankle swelled up twice its size. Nothing dire, but uncomfortable and unbecoming and slowed the over all healing process. But, as you can see, everything turned out fine.
This is my third tattoo.

So we went last night, designs in hand, down to see Mookie, who had done the other work i have several years ago.
‘A’ was a go—he was getting a black band around lower arm-tricky to execute but simple in plan. My ideas, were shot down :( but only because M advised that they were too fine/closed in to look good in time. He has always been wary of doing tight artwork b/c he knows it won’t hold up well and wants clients to still be happy years later with the work. Since the other 2 pieces he did for me look sharp after 7 years, i’m stifling my impatient nature and listening to the expert.
We considered a different art work i had with me. This one has the same Lily of the Valley floral element as the one i had intended for my forearm but it is considerably larger. In fact, it’s likely going to run the length of my calf; a companion to Edward on the other leg.
So i returned home… back to the drawing board. M has a copy and both of us will be tweeking it a bit to simplify the design (more bold contrast, fewer fine lines). When next we meet, we will compare ideas and –hopefully– merge the 2 into the final image. I was hoping he could squeeze this in today, but alas, was not to be. So next weekend, Sunday, I have an appointment first up, at noon.

Have been planning a small circular piece for my left forearm (to balance the one on the right).
And thinking i should get the other one while i’m there (this one destined above the elbow). If my arm is to be lame, might as well be pampering it at the same time rather than 2x.
