Had a roof wetting 4 months ago

ceremony for DH’s building last night. In the pitch dark, because an underground cable in the city caught fire yesterday and there was no power.

I had never been to the building before, just knew wher it was: 1 block east from the famous Market theatre and 1 block north from an award winning rehabilitated building for Ashanti Gold.

1940’s building, very solid, three stories high, cleaned up,cleared out, smartened. about 1000sq metres.

View from the roof: wonderful, could just spot the Nelson Mandela bridge, see the M1 highway with cars snaking home, hear music from the theatre precint.

In any other place the building would be perfect for an arts school -music, theatre, dance, one dept on each floor.

Have resolved to have a new year’s eve party on the roof.

Watched a video on National Geographic channel 5 months ago

that was shot somewher in SA (recognised the accents). Also, the scenery was typical of dry northern thorn bush.

It showed a group of lions near a river, and an approaching herd of buffalo. The lions then ambushed a baby buffalo and three lions and the baby buffalo fell into the river. A large crocodile approached and tried to snatch the baby buffalo from the lions, but they managed to drag it out of the river, up the sand bank and onto dry land. The herd of buffalo then returned from their flight and attacked the lions, including about three more lions that had joined the fray, giving one a kick, chasing the others – basically, putting the six or so lions to flight. Amazingly, the baby buffalo got up and re-joined the herd. The video did not show how badly it had been injured in the struggle.

What an epic struggle – and delightful to see that the ‘predators’ did not win. Mind you, buffalo are exceedingly bad tempered, large beasts with vicious horns and hoofs.(hooves?)

My helper collapsed 7 months ago

in floods of wracking tears this morning, on the floor of my bedroom.

Her husband is leaving her … I could only sit on the floor with her, patting her shoulders and rubbing her back. Then I made her tea and we talked for a bit, advising her to go home. She wanted me to talk to him ... why, I don’t know.

I was ok, but then inexplicably burst into tears about an hour later when my business partner phoned.

Met a Zulu warrior 7 months ago

very early this morning, on our way to the walking group.

He was striding along,no doubt to an election victory party, brandishing a knobkierie, wearing a ‘skirt’ made of many animal tails, mostly from the cat family such as servals, civits and leopards, with a bright white shirt and a cream linen jacket.

Judging from his regalia, he must be of high rank.

I wished that I had had a camera with me.

Enjoyed the 'Messiah' at Nelson Mandela square 8 months ago

A free concert for ‘women for peace’, this afternoon. About 1200 people attended, and many patrons at the restaurants that surround the square, also listened.

The contralto soloist was good – lovely, mellow voice, and the tenor is a singular character, Nicholas Nicolaides, who is a super artist and happens to be a dwarf. The bass had a good voice but his diction needs attention. I did not enjoy the soprano so much – her voice was a bit shrill. Enjoyed standing for the Hallelujah chorus and I must confess that we both sang it, along with the choir. (Not in full voice, butaudibly none the less.)

In preparation for the sun, I took my big green hat woven from date palm fibre, and carried the matching handbag. (Acquired from awomen’s co-operative in Zanzibar.) But a large sturdy marquee had been erected, so the sun was not a problem (to DH’s releif as he finds the hat a bit ‘much’ – not only is it literally grass green, but it also has swirls of grass stands sweeping around the crown.

Afterwards we crossed the square and entered the Michaelangelo hotel for high tea. We were lucky to meet our ‘nephew’ (a niece’s long time boyfriend) who was supervising the high tea table, and was pleased to show us what was available. We enjoyed tea and eats, and did spot a very glamorous woman who looked very over dressed -dripping in gold and silk – very ‘big’ blonde hair, her skirt very short, her gold platform shoes had 6inch heels. Who was she? Don’t know, but clearly a character.

The characters we did spot were from the forthcoming cricket tournament, which was transferred to SA after the attacks recently.

    A pleasant outing all round.
