How beautiful that one can speak with your hands and be heard. The graceful flow of the shape of the fingers. amazing!

I used to know some basic signs, but I forgot most of it.

I have always been interested in learning sign language and I have been learning some. I just don’t have time to practice that much.

I have been studying ASL for the past 13 years and I am still learning and still loving it. My best advice for learning it and doing it well is to get out in the Deaf community and meet friends and interact! It is the only way to become proficient at a language. :)

I thought I would have the perfect means to do this, but the girl moved out of town!

I will be starting ASL II in January and am really excited. I want to get enough experience that someday I can have a job working with deaf children and art. That would be awesome!

In coaching gymnastics, I had 2 deaf students…they really increased the amount of SL that I currently know.
Now, I am without environment…so there is no way to really become fluent. That is the biggest part…believe me, I am fluent in a few languages already and you must be able to use it constantly in order for it to stick and become a part of you. Maybe the day will come when I become friends with a deaf person…or something else that changes the environment.

I work with quite a few kids with autism, and many of them aren’t too verbal. I’ve learned basic sign as a way of communicating with them, but I would definitely like to know more. There’s nothing more heartbreaking than a child trying so hard to tell you something, but you not being able to understand it at all. Since I want to become a special education teacher, this will be especially useful to me in the future!
