How I did it: When I first started collecting postcards in my youth, I let everyone I knew (relatives, mostly) know that I wanted postcards from wherever they went.  Some were pretty mundane, and most were from pretty local areas.  As I got older, I found some pen pals from other countries and exchanged postcards with them.  This helped foster a desire to not just collect the postcards, but to actually travel to other countries.  And while traveling, even though it was a "totally touristy" thing to do, I continued collecting postcards.  I have some that I've never mailed, and then I have some that I've mailed to my children that I have kept over the years.

  • I keep my postcards in a binder
  • You can get photograph insert sheets that fit the binder - they are mostly for 4" x 6" photos and will hold many postcards
  • I use 8 1/2" x 11" document protectors for the larger post cards
  • I don't remove the stamps - I think the stamps make it more interesting
  • I date postcards that were not mailed to me.  I try to write a note about where I got the postcard from, too.
  • I DON'T like the "magnetic" type photo albums for postcards because you can't see the back of the postcard and eventually it will ruin your cards

Lessons & tips:

  • People who collect postcards often also collect or are interested in stamps, so use the non-standard or "commemorative" stamps, even if the postage ends up being more than technically needed
  • check out www.postcrossing.com if you would like to both send and receive postcards
  • If your company is an international one and you feel comfortable asking, ask your coworkers in other offices to send you some postcards - you could offer to reimburse them for the cost of the cards/postage, but I'm willing to guess that they will just be happy to send them to you anyway
  • Let people know that even the "kinda boring" postcards from their home town is interesting to you

    6) China
    7) Japan
    8) USA – Kansas, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Indiana

    8 down and a lot more countries to go.

    I have already sent postcards to these places—USA, Finland, Netherland, France, and China. Anyone interested to trade cards? Just let me know. =)

    I like sending a receiving postcards from all over because I like reaching out to different people from different places.

    It’s always an ongoing process. I’ve kept every postcard I’ve received, not only from postcrossing, but from postcardx.net as well.

    It would be nice to have a postcard from every country – wouldn’t that be amazing? Perhaps one day.
