Become a Successful Book Editor

That wasn’t written on an application, that was actually asked of me in an interview, as if she was reading from a script. I told her I may already be a winner in the Publisher’s Clearing House Sweepstakes. She wrote it down.

Is this what I have to look forward to? Really?

Bookstores are kind of awesome.
Perhaps owning one would be fun (and absolutely maddening).

What do you call a sort-of-epiphany? A realization?
Well I came to the realization that maybe I don’t want to be an editor. I definitely don’t want to work in publicity. I want to work with books but I want to put them together. I would say design but then I’d have to go to school. And frankly, while Chip Kidd is around, what’s the point? I want to make books. Maybe I should look into printers – then I can play with paper and all that.
Stupid realizations…you couldn’t come last year?

Just when I was about to quit, the director of the department says that I am in the “top 1 percentile of interns”. If that’s not enough she says they are going to start paying me – granted it’s not a lot of money, but it’s still money. Someone is looking out for me. ^{Thanks David}

So I got the job at the publishing house and have been here for two weeks now, and all the glimmer has rubbed off. First off, I am in the publicity department which wouldn’t be my first choice (or second, or third…) for areas to work in. And I haven’t really learned much either. I feel like this is my one chance to have an internship before school starts for me again, and now it seems like I’m wasting it. Not sure whether to stick it out or pack it in and find a new place where I can learn more.
