After around two months of classes I can already do something that resembles flamenco. Maybe in a year or so I can say I’ve learned to dance (:

There’s a dance studio I found in San Francisco (about 40 minutes from where I live). I used to dance modern a couple of years back, but it’s been a long ass time since I’ve tried to dance.

Found a local teacher! 2 years ago

The teacher at the convention was from Ann Arbor… which isn’t so far from home. I think though, that salsa or tango might be my next targets instead of flamenco. The dance obsession is getting a little on the expensive side, and there are really no prospects of improvement because I keep falling in love with new forms of dance! At the convention, I decided that I really like Turkish and Persian dance, even though I used to think that I was strictly an Egyptian/Cabaret kind of girl, and I saw some dancers performing Moroccan and Gulf-style folkloric dances and really want to explore those too. My teacher would hurt me if she knew this because she’s all about tradition and being pretty, but the girls doing tribal looked really cool too, and I love their costuming. It’s a good thing that bellydancers aren’t washed up in their early 20s or something because I have a lot of studying ahead of me.

Convention 2 years ago

I’m registered for a bellydance convention in November, and they’re offering a session on flamenco! The teacher is requesting that we bring along character shoes, so it’s also a good excuse to make a visit to the dance and theater costuming shop.

Flamenco dance teacher in Chicago 2 years ago

Flamenco dance is definitely a goal worth doing! After 15 years in the art, it’s still exciting every day. My studio, Flamenco Chicago offers a great environment for beginners (as well as intermediate and advanced students), with even beginning students having the option to perform in our student shows twice a year.

If you can’t find a flamenco class near you, contact us to get on our e-list to receive word of possible online classes starting soon.

possibly in the fall ... 2 years ago

I took a lot of dance classes as a kid, but flamenco is the only one that ever really grabbed me. I tracked down a class in town that’s not too pricey, but with everything else I’ve made goals for, I’m not sure I’ll have time for this one. Definitely high on the list, though.

I'm obsessed! 3 years ago

I spent a year in Spain and thought it was the most hackneyed hobby I could think of but now that I’m back, I’m totally into it. Can you link Things? Because I swear it’s helping my confidence.

I’m broke as a joke or else I would be taking lessons right now. I saw them in the paper and they’re $50 a session. That doesn’t seem quite right. It’s only a 4 class program. How can you learn the art of Flamenco in 4 classes? Flamenco has fascinated me for years. As soon as I hear the music, I feel like my blood is ignited and coursing fire through my body, and I have no choice but to move. I think I have gypsy ancestors. Maybe I’ll get an instructional DVD. Does anyone know of a good one?

Inspiring 3 years ago

I went to a Spanish dinner not long ago and there were Flamenco dancers there. One was deliciously curvy, a woman in the purely aesthetic and spiiritual sense of the word and she was magnificent.
