How to get a job at barnes and noble
How I did it: When I decided I REALLY wanted to work at barnes and noble, I was under eighteen. But I stuck it out and applied a couple of months after my birthday and (fortunately) in hiring season. Personally, I knew a respectable college kid who worked there, which realllly helped. B&N in general receives a huge volume of applications, so every little bit helps.
Lessons & tips: DO NOT TRANSFER INTO A PARTICULAR DEPARTMENT! remain a floating, jack-of-all-trades bookseller.. you will be trained in every department, but they will put you where they need you. as a consequence, you will do something different every day and you will constantly be busy and a happy person.
Additionally, most of the people (my coworkers) and others who work for the company are pretty outgoing. If you're a regular or a college kid who frequents the store, I'd recommend socializing with the baristas and booksellers alike. Personally, I'd recommend anyone who I got a good vibe from. Honestly, I don't think the company really goes off qualifications but you should definitely 1. have had a job and 2. not done anything sufficiently sketchy because they will background check. You get paid minimum wage but if you employ a bit of what I call "creative thinking" the perks of the job are endless.
Resources: I was familiar with the people who worked there, and even if I didn't know them, I at least attempted to socialize before applying. Don't act like you're interviewing to be accepted into a position with NASA. Take the interview seriously but relax. You're applying for a job in an extremely casual atmosphere, but at least attempt to look busy. Don't make it apparent if you're slacking off.
As far as a full-time position is concerned, look elsewhere. Most of the time it requires you to become trapped in one particular department and I'd say most of the full-timers are unhappy with their jobs. I think this stems from the fact that as a full-time employee, they expect you to carry the weight and pressures of the store but do not reciprocate your responsibility with a decent wage.
