growing up i dont remember the tv ever being off. it was always on in the background even if no one was watching it. one day i was reading and my mom turned on the tv just cuz it was too quiet. this was the moment i realized i needed to cut down on my tv time. i have cut down quite a bit but i still watch a little. i think all ive done is trade my tv habit for a computer addiction but thats the next thing ill work on.

I’ve done this for 2 months and they were the most peaceful and fulfilling 2 months of my life!!! I need to do this permanently, and I wish everyone luck attempting this.

I’ve been TV free for 7 months and I don’t miss it a bit. I still watch movies, but not often. I have so much more time to accomplish things since I gave up the TV. We’re going to move soon and the TV is going into the basement so we can have a real living room.

basically did this... 2 years ago

In January we got rid of Cable TV and I didn’t watch any tv for at least a week or 2. Didn’t really miss it. We still don’t have cable and don’t watch regular tv, just the occasional video. I like it this way =)

    afterthought... 3 years ago

its ironic that such are the workings of web tech that when you click on a button to say ‘i have succeeded in becoming TV free’ that the adverts on the page are ‘live television’ ‘internet tv’ ‘watch live tv on your pc’ ... shrug

it wasn’t quite as eco-freindly as I’d hoped. Having discovered that there’s no recycling facility around me, that noone at work wanted a TV as old as mine and that selling electrical goods requires you to be sure that certain electrical regs are passed (and if someone gets hurt using the thing, you’re liable for up to £5k!) – I wound up junking the TV. It was thrown (don’t know where I got the super human strength from cos it was BIG!!!) over a wall into a pit. My TV licence was cancelled today. I have discovered a new enthusiasm for cleaning – because I’m not quite sure what to do with myself. Anyway, it feels good right now, happy to hear from anyone who has any survival tips!

it just occurred to me 3 years ago

that as my TV seems to be on the blink, I could easily accomplish this by taking my TV to the dump (or whatever you need to do to dispose of a TV – does anyone know the UK regs on this?) then its done. Sorted.

Don't miss it 3 years ago

I used to watch hours and hours of TV in the background as I lounged around on the Internet. I watched all kinds of crap just because it was there. One day, I got fed up with the idiocy of it—cut off the cable and never looked back. I have lotsa DVDs, so I started watching those. But it’s been several months since I cut the cable, and now I can’t remember the last time I watched a DVD. I’m on the Internet all the time, so maybe I’ve subbed one addiction for another. But at least my brain cells hafta work more while I’m on the Internet. I read something a while back that said TV basically puts your brain in a barely working state. Don’t need that. Need to keep every brain cell I’ve got left.
