For my friend who was signing her divorce papers yesterday and didn’t want to put the papers in the envelope, I suggested making a ceremony of it. She said she didn’t realize the “mere formality” of signing the papers would be so overwhelming. And I said it was the formality of it that WAS overwhleming. Just as a wedding is overwhelming even if you live together and have been engaged for a while. So I suggested owning it and giving it her own kind of ceremony. This helped her a lot!

I am feeling so inspired lately by this whole new idea of processing emotions by involving the right brain and the unconscious. It came up again when I was talking about my dad’s funeral with my brother. Suddenly these things that seem a little devoid of meaning… I realize that it’s not that the rituals are meaningless, but that we are meant to be more actively involved in creating meaningful rituals – that work for us.

So, I’m on a kick now. A full-blown kick. 4 years ago
