The solution I had come up with is currently not working, because I had to exchange one of the ‘puters and since the new one has Vista, things don’t run so smoothly anymore :(
I’ll have to figure out how to solve this…

I’m not quite there, but I have been getting better about this. I’ve been backing up my blog every week, and I’ve done monthly backups of my whole system. It’s still going to be a while before this is checked off, I think – I’m still figuring out a routine that works for me.

I was doing well for a while there, backing up everything once a month, without fail. But I fell out of the habit about six months ago, and I haven’t had anything completely catastrophic happen recently….
Until today.
I no longer trust this computer. At all. Starting a new backup routine as soon as I manage to get everything back to something like normal.
Well, I’ve finally snagged enough external hard drive space to run regular on-site backups. I think I should still probably sign up for Mozy or something, though, for another layer of protection in off-site backups.
Des is slowly regaining her sanity (unfortunately?)
...then I’m doing great!
The last time I backed up was February 2007. That’s really bad. But I did it tonight, and only because my fan has started to make an ugly noise and I know how messed up a computer can get when it overheats and protectively shuts down in the middle of booting. But, it’s done.
I now have a “time machine” backup of my local machine as well as archived versions of pictures, documents and music. I will have to develop a schedule to arching those again but I will call this done for now.
well, after a regular OS update, my computer refused to boot up. Took it into the store and they could not get it working either. They suggested I buy the new OS and install that. Well, that required reformatting the hard drive. In a last ditch attempt to save the pictures and such I bought an external hard drive and was able to transfer the pictures, documents and music to that. I am still reloading all the software but once that is done I will be using this new drive for a backup.
Time Machine will keep backing up a regular habit (hourly) without effort on my part (the ONLY way I will regularly backup my computer :D )
To AnnieDee’s point though, that is not the same as an archive. I also need a way to ARCHIVE pictures and documents on DVD. So far my directores are small enough to fit on a single DVD but that will not last forever. Can anyone recommend a method for writing large directories spanning multiple DVDs for the Mac?
Today I finally got around to setting up time machine to backup my MacBook. I’m using a NAS drive to store my backups – since non-local disks aren’t supported by default it took the following preference change in the terminal:
defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1
The seamlessness of being able to set it and forget it was a big reason I was excited to upgrade to Leopard. I’ll give it a week and see how well it works.
