We’re going to Montreal! Finally, a place to use my six years of French classes.
The AP test is coming up, so I’ve begun practicing. I have one French friend who is willing to put up with me, and I’m fairly certain all the German exchange kids speak French too, so maybe I’ll practice with them? Plus all my classmates who are just as freaked out about the test as I am. But still, it doesn’t compare to the real deal, so we’re going to Quebec this summer. Heck yeah.
...one must speak FRENCH!
I suppose I’ll say I’ve done this because I’ve conversed enough in French with my host mother to count as “conversation.” however, when I marked this as a goal I was picturing an easy, fluent conversation. This has NOT happened! Speaking a different language is extremely difficult, and everything is a struggle. If I know what I want to say in english but don’t know the words in French, I have to try to describe it using words I know how to say, which always ends up being confusing or I just give up on the sentence. Also, my grammar in speaking is really bad! I can write decently, but speaking on-the-spot is a completely different thing! Luckily my host mother has a lot of patience so I don’t feel completely moronic, though I know I sound it! However, my comprehention is definitely improving and it doesn’t take me as long to translate as it used to. I’m here for two more weeks so I’ll see how things go! I’m excited to say I’ve accomplished this.
I’m going to Tours, France for a January Term abroad… I’ll be staying with a host family and I’ll be learning french like never before so I’m sure this will happen.. just a few more months… =)
You feel so good about yourself when u learn that you can actually speak another language. Also the French people think that it is very polite of you to have learned their language and can speak it to them!
i stayed with a family in france
so the whole time i had to speak french.
it was quite difficult but i was surprized at how much i understood them
I’m always worried that my french is too bad to talk to french people with it. But I also know its the only way to improve. There are quite alot of french people in Edinburgh and I seem to meet a few every now and again in pubs and the like but I always fall back into English after a couple of sentences.
I was talking to someone at a party recently that suggested I sign myself up for an exchange through the university. They set you up with a person who is over here from french speaking nation and wants to learn english. So you spend half the time together speaking french and half the time speaking english. I think this is a good idea as at least the person will be expecting my poor language skills… anyway must check this out as an option.
