I’ve kept “making my bed” i.e. rolling up the futon and folding the blankets, each morning for the past 3 weeks.

I’ve been vacuuming regularly, and my room seems really spacious now that there are very few items on the floor.

I’ll be moving to a new place next summer, and this whole experience has really shown me that it IS worth the (seemingly ridiculous) expense to invest in good storage containers that fit your specific place.

I’ll just think of it as investing in “future peace of mind” next time I have to buy the stuff.

Successful first week 2 years ago

I managed to keep my floor clear all through the work week! I want to make this a habit.

The weekend’s coming up now, so it’s time to vacuum – but that should be short and sweet since there’s almost nothing to pick up or move out of the way!

I do have a lot of things (clothes) piled up on the couch in my room though. I guess I’ve kind of transferred my ‘messy place’ from the floor to the couch :-( Need to sort that out tomorrow morning.

This is going very well 2 years ago

Since I got my space back (boyfriend was here for 3 weeks), I have rearranged my room. I’m now sleeping on a futon, and I’ve decided to fold it up every morning, so I have a huge empty space in the centre of my room. It’s wonderful!

It has only been 3 days so far, I hope I can keep it up during the week when I’m rushing off to work. I am NOT a morning person, and I loathe to add anything else to my morning routine, but I think it might be worthwhile in the end.

Try try try! (Speaking of not being a morning person, I should be in bed right now! Ooops. Goodnight.)

    THIS! This... 3 years ago

has such an impact on my general peace of mind. Clean floors make my room a haven; cluttered / unvacuumed floors make my room another chore on the to-do list. An especially heavy, time-consuming, yet subconscious weight on my shoulders.

If I ever in my life hired a maid to to anything -just one thing, it would be the floors, because that’s the thing that would be most worth the expense.

I would clean 3 bathrooms just to have someone else clean my floor.

I think I’m getting better at this.

    Oh yeah... 3 years ago

I forgot to mention (how cool is this) that I have a tatami floor in my bedroom here in Japan – it’s wonderful.

And it is nice and clean still, lucky me! :-)

It's only been three days 3 years ago

But I can feel the difference already.

First of all, when I go into my room, it’s tidy (hard to have a messy room if the floor’s clean), and that makes it a more peaceful relaxing place.

Secondly, I have been working on my exercise goals for the last 2 nights, stretching and doing crunches / pushups on my tidy floor.

Thirdly, it’ s easier to vacuum if I do it more often. So I’m goign to vacuum again tonight. Hopefully that’ll keep the dust down and the hair off the floor (yuck).

Who would have thought that such a basic thing would have so many little benefits

I hate doing floors 3 years ago

    - because there’s always so much clutter to pick up and move out of the way. That’s the part I hate.

I need to clean the floors in my room more often, and there’s no one to blame except myself. Why do I have so much clutter on the floor!?

Ok, this goal is closely tied in with getting the laundry done and cleaning up the piles of paper (i.e. if I do both those things at once, my floor will be 99% uncluttered).

But oh, those piles of paper are my ultimate nemesis! >:-)

    So-so 3 years ago

I’ve been doing fairly well at this. With three cats tracking litter all over the hardwood floors several times a day, it’s really a necessity. I’m constantly sweeping the floors. Not too long ago I bought a Shark cordless floor sweeper. It doesn’t work as well as I had hoped for, but it’s nice and light weight, easy to use one-handed, and doesn’t take up much storage space. I’d say it’s been worth the $20 i paid for it. What I really need to be doing on a regular basis though is washing the kitchen and bathroom floors. I’ve just been keeping them swept, but they ought to be washed at least once a week, and I just never seem to have time. I need to make time to wash these two (very small!) floors. Sweeping just isn’t enough for kitchen and bathroom.
