DocDAnother one off to a foreign country

Had to Say goodbye to Angie(the dog) and my student, Rick. He’s off to America for 3 years at an exclusive boarding school in Connecticut. Good luck, Rick. Can I have your dog? 4 days ago

DocDI hate it when this happens

DocDThis doesn't belong in my food section, because I wood never buy, cook or eat it.

This is the first time I’ve seen whale meat in my favorite fish shop. And this isn’t for cooking, this is sashimi. It comes with a packet of grated garlic which you mix with shoyu. Slice up the raw whale and dip in the sauce. I’m not sure who buys it. Nobody I know eats it. Besides the moral issue, is the health issue. Whale is loaded with mercury. 1 month ago

DocDA nice bottle of Spanish Merlot with dinner

Not bad, but I probably shouldn’t have drunk the whole thing and then 2 tall beers. 2 months ago

DocDGood news and bad news

The good news is, I just got cast in a coffee commercial that will shoot next week. Yay me!.

The bad news is, someone just got murdered down the street and PD helos are searching overhead at this very moment. Yes, it even happens here in peaceful Japan and in very peaceful Kichijoji. 2 months ago

DocDIt's avocado Saturday

Every Saturday I have an English class in Shibuya. There’s a really nice green shop near the station. Beautiful big Mex avos for a buck apiece. One of my favorite fruits, I never fail to pick up a couple or three. 3 months ago

DocDSYL bought us a nice bottle of wine for our combined birthdays

Ravenswood Zinfandel from the Valley of the Moon, the next valley over from Napa. I’ve been to this winery a couple of times, so I know them to be good. They specialize in zins. 3 months ago

DocDThat's my quarter

Some years after Jim Morrison died, his guitarist, Robbie Krieger, did his own album. My friend was shooting the cover and invited me to the studio. Robbie didn’t have a pick, so I pulled a quarter out of my pocket and said, “Use this.” 5 months ago

DocDThe EMU has sent me some Marmite.

Since my only experience with a similar product has been vegemite, I was anxious to give marmite a try. It has a bit of a kick to it, but I like it. I’m hooked. Thanks Emu. 6 months ago

DocDJust got some sad news

My sister-in-law’s father just passed. In a country where the male life expectancy is 62, he lived to 80, an ex parliamentarian, living out his retirement in a ger outside the city walls. The family has had more than its share of heartache. Oyuna, now a parliamentarian herself, suffered through her first husband being assassinated and her brother imprisoned on false charges of murder under communist rule. Our family too, has had its share of misfortune: my brother’s first wife dying of a rare disease and my ups and downs that I don’t want to go into. Sometimes, life throws us lemons, yeah? What are you gonna do? Make lemonade! “And I’ll get a swig in hell from Gunga Din.” 7 months ago

DocDMy student brought me a gift from Saipan

Pacific islanders love spam. In Hawaii, they make spam sushi, which to me is an abomination. This is a spam made just for islanders. Probably has more fat. They love fat. Limited edition. Maybe I should save it and sell it on e-bay years later. 8 months ago

DocDAnother one bites the dust

This semi crash landed in front of me. I wanted to pick it up, but I knew he had at least one short flight left in him. They can’t bite, just a small sap sucking mouth. 8 months ago

DocDBiri za Kiddo

When I saw this Meiji Period photo of a Japanese houseboy, I thought it looked so similar to this photo of Billy the Kid, shot about the same time, so combined them. It would have looked a little cooler had the houseboy been holding a sword in his left hand instead of an umbrella (“casa”, in Japanese).
“Hey, amigo, it’s rainin’ out here. Mind if I step inside?”
“Hai, Biri-san, dozo, mi casa su casa.” 9 months ago

DocD"Brushy" Billy Roberts

Claimed to be Billy the Kid. Had the same long healed bullet holes in the exact same places. He told the story about how he didn’t die that night so long ago in Fort Sumner, New Mexico. (See comment) 10 months ago

DocDThings are not right in China. Yeah, big news that.

DocDWell, here it is

$1000 in change. I’ve been saving these 500 yen coins since October. Finally reached 80,000 yen. At the exchange rate of 80 yen to a dollar, that’s 1K$. But I won’t stop here. I’ll keep throwing them in the box. 11 months ago

DocDMy personal bag lady

J2 has been a cutter for over 20 years. I don’t have to go to her salon. I get a free home cut. When she cuts my hair, she always wears plastic bags on her feet. 11 months ago

DocDJack fruit is one of the largest fruit in the world

I’ve seen them 2 1/2 feet long and really big around. It’s not a sweet fruit and kind of chewy, so it’s often cut into small chunks and stir fried with vegetables. I can’t remember where I shot this. I’m guessing Indonesia or Thailand. 11 months ago
