How I did it: My wife and I joined Canine Assistants when we lived in the Atlanta area. As volunteers, we worked to train dogs to assist individuals in wheelchairs. This organization has now gone national and you can become involved even if you don't live in the Atlanta area. Check them out at www.canineassistants.org. The work is extremely rewarding. If you can't find a chapter of canine assistants near you, google therapy dogs to find an organization in your area.

Lessons & tips: Get ready to spend some fun time with other dog lovers training dogs for a purpose that brings joy to others less fortunate who may be confined to a wheelchair.

Canine Assistants is an organization in the Atlanta area that trains therapy dogs primarily for individuals in wheelchairs. My wife and I have worked with the group in the past to assist in the training of numerous dogs. It is undoubtedly the best volunteer work, and the most rewarding work we have done. You can volunteer for a Canine Assistants group in many areas other than Atlanta. Check them out at www.canineassistants.org.
