problem solved!
LaMina just got accepted to a MA program at Duke.
A friend – a psychologist – recently made a comparison between teaching kids to stay off drugs and teaching kids not to be materialistic/uber-consumers.
She said that today we seldomly have to forgo purchasing something (and experiencing whatever it is that we are told we would experience when we purchased… que sé yo Dolce and Gabanna (gag!) or that amazing Coco Channel purchase (gag!)... life in Latin America is the place to learn to break this habit since you see such stark contrasts… the 17 year-old with an incredibly expensive designer bag, walking by the 3 year-old boy with snot dripping from nose asking for $0.25. I am so very thankful that I live and see these reminders on a daily basis – it is bizarre to call home and hear how “economic freedom” can actually be so meaningless.
(Wow do I sound narcissistic… sorry, but catch my drift, right?)
p.s. Chanel purses are actually quite ugly…
p.p.s. but that hasn’t stopped teens from engaging in “Designer Sex” – becoming sexually exploited in order to purchase high ticket items: http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/micro_stories.pl?ACCT=617800&TICK=NEWS&STORY=/www/story/08-10-2003/0001998144&EDATE=Aug+10,+2003

I recommend this program (and most of Frontline for that matter). This is about mass marketing, really scary :S

Last month I was shopping for a father’s day greeting card. Besides the millions of permutations and combinations between From {Son, Daughter, Wife, Grandkids, Parents, etc} and To {Husband, dad, son, grandfather, uncle, etc} our society (and by that I mean companies) has decided that it is time for pets to start giving greeting cards too. “From dog to dad”, “from cat to mom”... Do we really have noting better to do with our money and time? This is another great example of increasing sales by simply creating a brand new market. Sadly, all these cards will be tossed in the garbage like all other greeting cards.
