The Army is changing my life in both subtle and dramatic ways. Until that all settles out, I don’t think I’m doing any radical changes…

Need a Change !!! 12 months ago

Hello everyone! Just started a job working at a nucluar site, and I still want the hell out of here! Have been to chattanooga and a few other places. Love the country, and have been country all my life. My kids are all grown, with nothing holding me here. Really nervous about doing this, but am thinking seriously about it. Rode my motorcycle down this summer, and man is it pretty. Can anyone suggest a nice area not to populated? Thanks mike

TENNESSEE 17 months ago

Hi, I am a mother of four children, 3 are teenagers. I have a paralegal degree and have 7 years experience as a paralegal, 3 years of that was being a paralegal supervisor. I know work in a title escrow office. I am wanting to move to Tennessee. I would like a small town but do not want to drive an hour for work. I wouldn’t mind changing professions either. My kids love to camp and fish so I will need some place like that. I will rent for now because I won’t be coming with much money. Can anyone tell me where the best place to “restart” my life would be? Maybe give me a county or a city, town in Tennessee that I could start with…Thanks

Maybe one of the hardest things I’ve ever done! Need to leave my job of 28 years, sell my home of 27 years and leave my community which I love. Nevertheless-this needs to be done-whew!

I moved to Tennessee! 18 months ago

I own a small-scale farm in Tennessee, and it has been a real blessing for me. The cost of living is inexpensive compared to other markets. The town I live in is very small, but theres a small college town 11 miles away. I like the country and it’s remoteness, and peacefulness, -and, I am only 16 miles from a National Recreational area by Kentucky lake and Lake Barkely. There’s lots of land there to go hiking, biking, swimming, canoing, boating, etc. etc., and the people are friendly.

Though I haven’t lived consistently in this place because I find it near impossible to find work that pays anything decent compared to St. Louis, or Florida, or other more expensive markets (even Nashville isn’t right for me particularly, though it’s only a couple hours drive away. But I dearly love it here. Also, I like to travel a lot so it is a place of refuge between working and traveling.

If you plan on moving here do your research in finding a place near major or international airports, as it gets expensive to travel or even parking at the airport in Nashville, and also Nashville isn’t a major hub for many international destinations. You just have to make sure you are desired as an employee instead of the situation I find where you’re at the employer’s mercy for keeping a job.

Sunday (Day after tomorrow) I’m going to go out hiking in my woods and take a nap in my hammock and enjoy the beautiful spring weather!

My quiet, suburban, Delaware neighborhood is rapidly being taken over by Mexican gangs. One gang leader lives directly across the street from me, with some of his friends and family (18-20 people in a 3 bed house!). It’s getting scary here. Just the other night there was some sort of retaliation going on. 25 or so guys with baseball bats were freaking out, screaming in spanish and beating on cars and people. They were carrying guns, and brandished them, but I don’t think any were fired. My hubby doesn’t want to move at all. He claims it’ll never happen again. He claims the risk of being shot in a crossfire of a gang war is equal no matter where you live. (I think he’s insane.) He thinks it’s no big deal, but I fear for the safety of my little kids.

My parents live in an itty-bitty Tennessee town. They moved there 3 years ago, and they love it. It’s super quiet and peaceful. They do gardening and fishing. They could have chickens if they wanted them. One of my goals in life is to have a little hobby farm. Chickens are illegal here.

There are 100 reasons for me to move my family to Tennessee. My dear hubby refuses. He say we’ll divorce first. I’ve gotten to the point where I’m willing to call his bluff on it.

Right now, I don’t work, and he supports us. I home-school and take care of the house. My intention is to get a job in Tennessee and support the family myself. I will actually be able to make more money than he ever could, since I’d be working for my father, and he makes a pretty good living without even trying. I figure it will be a decent trade-off for DH, considering. He’ll have to do the home-schooling and the housekeeping, but he says he’d like to do that “instead of working”. Maybe he’ll change his mind after a while, once he realizes that it IS work to home-school 2 kids and keep house.

So far, I haven’t said anything to him, but we MUST move, no matter where we go. Right now I’m just cleaning and decluttering everything. Next I’ll paint and replace the carpets. Once I’ve gotten it to the point where it looks like I’m already handling everything on my own anyway, I’ll let him in on the plan. I KNOW without a doubt he will fight me tooth and nail on this, so the less time spent in opposition, the better.

Some Things to DO 21 months ago

The GOAL is to move in 18 months to 2 years

  • Start files for the different counties
  • Send for info from the various chambers
  • Look up GA airports in the area
  • Look up 99’s, EAA and AOPA members in the area
  • Start reading my TN Farm Report emails again
  • Subscribe to some local newspapers
  • Plan a vacation to North Central TN
  • Start updating my garden journals with parallel info for TN
  • Keep saving money & getting out of debt
  • Keep de-junking my home (we are NOT going to bring 2 year old paid bills to TN like we did to NV!)

Crossed Kentucky off the List 21 months ago

So, we’ve narrowed it down to definitely Tennessee.

Starting to get info packets back from chambers of commerce. I’m going to be an expert at Tennessee pretty soon. I soooo miss living in The South.

Next, time to plan a vacation there. It’s been years since we’ve owned property there and visited on a semi-regular bases. I can’t wait to see those rolling green hills again.

Next step is to write to them and ask for their relocation packages.
