How I did it: I set up a bunch of Craigslist "cars & trucks - by owner" search feeds for different cities and watched the listings in my reader until someone in LA posted a 2001 focus wagon SE with pretty low mileage for not that much. Next day I hopped a budget flight to LA, and I drove it home three days later. Best car buying experience ever. Exactly the car I wanted and zero commission paid to some broker or sleazy used car dude.
