I thought it was time for another update. Very kind 43T’ers have now donated over $200 to my cousins Movember efforts – thank you!!! He has had a fantastic second half of the month. The total amount he has raised now stands at $1718.00 and he is ranked #200 out of all fundraisers in Australia (485 internationally).
Just a reminder that there are only five days left to donate, and you can do so here.
.... DONE ~ very simple and easy, for a very worthy cause…
I gave more than the required amount – after all he is my nephew!!
GO MIKEY!!!
Todd Schoonover Should really be sleeping now.
When you hear about fundraisers or recognition for health issues, it’s normally the women’s issues that get the most press. You rarely hear about men’s health issues. So when Ume invited me to help support her cousin as he raises money for The Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and beyondblue: the national depression initiative so that they may reach their aims of improving the state of men’s health, I signed right up.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer afflicting Australian men and is the second highest cause of cancer deaths in Australian men. Here in the United States, prostate cancer is the most common cancer, other than skin cancers, in American men. The American Cancer Society estimates that during 2008 about 186,320 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed in the United States. About 1 man in 6 will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime, but only 1 man in 35 will die of it. More than 2 million men in the United States who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point are still alive today.
Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in American men, behind only lung cancer. The American Cancer Society estimates that 28,660 men in the United States will die of prostate cancer in 2008. Prostate cancer accounts for about 10% of cancer-related deaths in men.
BeyondBlue is of special concern to me. My father was diagnosed with clinical depression a few years back. While he’s receoved through medication and the support of the family, he was at one point so bad that he wouldn’t leave the house. BeyondBlue is working to help people recognize the signs of depression, and to help remove the stigma for men for reporting it. If there wasn’t such a fear or shame for men in acknowledging their depression, they could get help sooner.
I made my donation today, and I hope that you’ll consider donating too via credit card or Paypal. To make a donation, click here.
The impact of your donation
Thank you for your generous support of Movember 2008. The money raised by Movember is donated to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and beyondblue: the national depression initiative and will be used in the following ways:
01
To change the attitude men have about their health. Our aim is to make men aware of the very real issues they face, thereby increasing early detection, diagnosis and effective treatment. This will ultimately reduce the number of male deaths from prostate cancer and suicide.

I donated now. I rationalized it as follows, “I really want to donate and I find that all the causes are worthwhile. I don’t have enough money now. What do I do?
I thought a bit.. if I am super organized and go get my salad veggies and make my own salad, I can donate this money”.
So. .now I better get organized and go shop for my veggies and not go out to eat salad :)
