I would love to raise a chicken (not OWN) – not for egg-laying, meat, or show – just a simple and plain companion. =)
He was a science project that I got to take home. The class watched his egg hatch. He turned out to be a huge Rhode Island Red rooster. But make sure you can accomodate him. Roosters love to crow in the morning…
We kept chickens for eggs, they’re great animals to have around and fresh eggs beat store bought ones any day. Plus we’d have different varieties of chickens, some would lay brown eggs, some even had green eggs. Keeping foxes & racoons from getting them is difficult sometimes, unless you keep them penned up all the time. Usually you don’t want roosters if you’re getting hens for eggs, but when you buy the chicks it’s hard to tell which are which so you get them occasionally. Roosters are pretty mean birds, they will terrorize you when you’re just a little kid!
Silly Drowa daring to love
I think building the chicken castle was the highlight…
I’m not meant to be a builder, but these chickens were livin’ high! It was totally worth it, picking my own eggs, and really knowing where my food came from. If you’re gonna eat high on the food chain, at least knowing where it’s been & how it’s been raised soothes my concience some…
