How I did it: Bought a plane ticket and coordinated hotel with some buddies driving down from San Fran.
The first year, I spent a ton of time studiously attending all the talks and learning new jargon. Around 9AM sitting by the pool studying my program, a dapper gent staggers by in tube socks. He takes a leisurely shot straight out of the handle of the boys with a garden room off the pool.
Maybe it was my sundress or my staring, but all of a sudden, he's suavely innundating me with questions... Or at least as suave as one could be, having not fully recovered from an evening of Edward 40 Hands and subsequent coma next to the hall ice maker. Have I seen his shoes? His speaker badge? Where can he find pain killers?
As I help him fulfill the lower level needs on Maslowe's hierarchy, it becomes apparent that I'm an avid supporter of pervasive data capture and mining. He dubs me "mine-us" and proceeds to deliver a devastatingly snarky talk about the dangers of pervasive data capture in household devices.
The next year I uh... "skipped" most of the talks to hang with his crew including a very aloof Dark Tangent (complete with shoulder spikes) and some very "enthusiastic" local talent.

The pinnacle conference in IT security, baby. Hackers, chicks, and booze galore. Who could ask for more? I found out that a Marine I talk to frequently has been there before, and met Kevin Mitnik.
