I love coffee but hate that there seem to be no quirky, individual shops that suits in the same way that Starbucks does. I both love and hate Starbucks at the same time. I hate that they are everywhere and all the exact same but I love the coffee they sell and how comfy and cozy they are and have never found anywhere else where I can spend so much of my time. Until I create my own…

Looks like, I’ll have to wait for 10 more years, before I get there again.

I find myself director of a project that is inspiring young people to create their own coffee house. While it isn’t only mine, it’s great fun!

My coffee shop 2 years ago

I’ve been dreaming about this for a few years now. I worked as a Barista and love the environment and energy in a well run espresso patisserie with good food, warmth and hospitality. This place will draw on the inspiration of many such places I’ve visited, from the internet cafes of San Francisco to the Mountainside Tea Houses of the Himalayas which were often the only bit of civilization and social gathering for miles and miles around. I remember a syrupy sweet, spicy peppery tea so hot I had to keep moving the glass in my fingers as I waited out a monsoon downpour and I’d like to recapture that aura of refuge, welcome and warmth in my place.

My vision includes a Salon up a winding staircase (no, silly, not a hair Salon or the Wild West) but fashioned after the Parisenne Salons of the Victorian Age. I see a large, library type room with a small, raised dias with a grand piano and a fireplace off to one side. It’s a room where artists, intellectuals and musicians of all types would gather for discussions and impromptu music. This is the heart of my espresstisserie (espresso-patisserie).

One of the great coffee houses which inspires me is on the ground floor of the Bach Dancing and Dynamite Society on the shores of the Pacific Ocean in Half Moon Bay. It was a combination book club/coffeehouse. However, I’d also focus on gourmet treats, organic and specialty coffees (such as small farmed beans from independent grower’s) and an abbreiviated cafe menu of tapas. I’d also, of course, have some wines and micro beers. And I’ve been studying small batch tea producers and the proper way to make a perfect cup of tea or chai; these would also be represented.

I like the idea of a place where people come to share ideas and socialize. I like lots of impromptu music, spontaneous conversations which draw strangers into exchanges they’d not normally have and lots of original art. Somehow, this place would be like the living room I’d have in my house if I’d been alive in the Summer of Love, but less drugs and more caffeine and conversation. LOL.

I have other ideas but since I’ve yet to see them realized in any coffeeshop I’ve visited but I’m saving them; wouldn’t want to give away all my suprises now would I?

Yes I owned a cafe 2 years ago

It was called the Retrocellar. We started as an antique shop and then turned it into a cafe where everything was for sale including the table and chairs, even the cups and saucers. We hosted artsy events like poetry readings and “psychic teas”. It was very hip, very small and very stressful. Would do it again under different circumstances so I wuldn’t have to be there all the time. Retail hours are long.

I like a basic cup of coffee. Large and hot. Five to seventeen sugars -depending on time/mood. And a bunch of cream. It’s nothing special. Infact, most of the time I think the beverage itself is just a transport medium for sugar.

“Large dark. Room for cream” is my order. Simple and concise. I smile at the barista, hand over my $1.75, warm my hands on the cup, move to a comfy chair to stare into space for an hour or so.

Coffee shops have become a nice haven for me. During working hours, it’s a nice sneak-away spot to rant about “monkey trials” with my work buddy. After work…I read, people watch, or meet up with friends before outings. I like the laid-back style of coffeeshops moreso than the coffee itself.

In my opinion, the perfect coffeeshop is not unlike any in existance today. It’s cozy, laid-back, and communal. It’s what I imagine as a fufilling work environment.

I wnat to own a coffeeshop, it’s one of my dream jobs. I just want to have a nice, quaint little coffeeshop, running well yet it feels so quiet, somewhere I can sit back and curl up with my favorite book or have a nice laugh with a few friends… somewhere bands and artists come to play… somewhere i don’t have to be bothered by the noisy atmosphere, somewhere i can just let loose and leave anytime I want to go shopping.
