Running the marathon Des Sables in 2009 16 months ago

I’m scheduled to run in 2009. Training is going well and I’m using the opportunity to try to help raise funds and awareness for refugee camp schools for child refugees from Darfur. In a few weeks I will be doing a test run – I’m going to run across Bermuda, which should hopefully lead to the completion of another one of my life goals getting completed. I’m writing about my progress on my 2009 marathon des sables blog

Got a place for 2009 2 years ago

I’ve been wanting to do this for years and have finally plucked up the courage to enter. Got a confirmed place for 2009 a couple of days ago.

I’ve also set up a forum for UK racers to discuss the event, training, kit choices etc, so if you’ve run the MdS before or are planning to, we’d love to hear your views and experiences.

The site is at http://www.themds.co.uk/forums/index.php

Good luck to anyone doing it in 2007!

Mike.

The most awesome experience. Physically tough and mentally shattering – you learn things about yourself that you didn’t know were there and see parts of you that you never want to see again.

Add that to the most amazing part of this planet and you can see why this is such a fantastic life experience.

If you really want to do it, then do it. MDS 2006 had many people who seen Ben Fogle do it previously and thought it would be easy – it isn’t but it’s worth it.

Toughest thing I've done so far! 3 years ago

830 registered to run, 760 made it to Morocco without training injuries. 29 failed their pre-race medicals, so 731 started the 2006 Marathon des Sables.

585 finished it – there were more drop outs this year than any other. 100 people needed IV fluids on the first day for dehydration, 7 people suffered comas, including one who had to be repatriated to France, and 2 suffered heart attacks. One bloke lost a toe, and another dislocated his shoulder.

This is not known as the toughest footrace in the world for nothing!

It is, however, and brilliant and unforgetable experience, in which I guarantee you will learn something about yourself and the human spirit.

If anyone else is considering doing this, and wants advice, please get in touch! If you’re wondering how I faired – 153rd overall, 22nd Brit.

Bon courage!

Still haven’t decided on food, still need to buy gear, worried I’m not fit enough… But really looking forward to it! Bring it on!
