I Want to start My Own Software Company..
I tell this to everyone that asks me how we surevive as a company, while many of our peer companies have struggled and failed. People dont share their ideas with just anyone, they share them with friends, and people that will help shape that concept. be approachable-Lesson 1
Being a stakeholder in my future. Why would I put 80+ hours a week at Google or Microsoft? This does not make sense. What am I really doing working for those companies. Write some software, test some software, teach some software, rewrite some software, collect a paycheck. In the end, none of that matters. I want to be in charge of my own destiny. How can I make your life better? Am I fulfulling a need that my customer has? Who risks and who is rewarded. Will I starve? Will someone sue me for trying to build a better mouse trap? Am I following the eight fold path? Am I easing someone else’s pain? The proof shall be in the pudding my friends.
I currently work full-time as a programmer. I don’t have a lot of time after work to build my own business. My ideal is, but try a small product that can get me started, and I little by little make it better, and add more product. As it grows, maybe one day I can quit working for others, and be my own boss. Not sure whether I’ll still have this idea after a few months or not.
I want to join with some very smart friends of mine, and make really cool software products that make us money. I want to do agile development and try hard to avoid all the pitfalls and management mistakes that every other job I’ve had has. I want to follow the Joel Spolsky plan of finding great people (I’ve a few in mind) and building things we are interested in (I’ve got a few ideas, too!).
Bloody hard work, this, and it never stops. Like a baby, it keeps you awake nights and consumes your every minute and dollar.
It’s been a very long strange trip indeed, but the bottom line for me is: yes, it was worth it. I can nearly live from the sales & support income. my business plan says that it should provide me a living income by the end of 2005, at which point things will become much simpler. I hope.
