I am excited to do this. I am supposed to start lessons in January and then my first performace will be in the spring. Wish me luck!
How I did it: For me, it started with seeing a fabulous show in London. Two of my best friends started a troupe and I came running. It didn't hurt that I had hardcore dance and costume experience in other venues, so I didn't take any classes, I just jumped in.
How you join will have a lot to do with what you want out of the experience and what you want to put in. Here's some options:
- they run the range from practical, to empowering, to downright spiritual. Pick a teacher that suits you and makes you feel comfortable. Pick a class that challenges you in the way you want to be challenged. Some classes feature a recital at the end, which lets you perform in semi-public to a very supportive audience - your friends and family!
Lessons & tips: It's really important to find your own comfort level. Be clear with yourself and others on:
- how much clothing you plan to remove
- how much effort you want to put into this
- whether you just want some short term fun, or whether this is a permanent thing in your life.

Is the troupe I work with. We do shows. Our director runs and amateur show as well. We also teach classes. We are based in the Boston area, but have been known to travel about the country.

however,I find the idea of jumping out of a cake in a basque and some feather’s oddly compelling. hmm….
I love going to see the shows put on by our local burlesque troupe. They are classy and creative, sassy and smart, and GORGEOUS women. They come in all shapes and sizes and persuasions – but each of them has something uniquely beautiful about them. And lot’s of confidence. Plus pretty outfits and great shoes. What girl wouldn’t want to be a part of that?
So as I get closer to some of my other goals, like losing weight and getting more fit … I would love to give it a try at least once just to say I did it!
